My name is Prakash Sasikumar, and I am a fourth-year student at Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College in India. I had the privilege of participating in an internship at Chang Gung University in Taiwan, which provided me with a remarkable opportunity to engage with international students and immerse myself in Taiwanese culture.
One of the highlights of my internship experience was the department tour organized during the Chinese New Year festivities. Throughout the trip, my fellow students at Chang Gung University extended their support in various aspects, including language translation, navigating local cuisine, understanding cultural nuances, exploring educational opportunities, and enjoying leisurely shopping experiences.
At first, I was unsure about connecting with others because of language differences and being new to Taiwan. But my department colleagues welcomed me warmly, making me feel at ease. Their friendliness, generosity, and occasional humor facilitated the rapid development of genuine relationships. I found myself eager to spend more time with them, as they treated me as one of their own, encouraging me to overcome my shyness and embrace confidence.
The tour, which took place from February 4th to 6th, 2024, included visits to notable attractions in Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County, located in southern Taiwan. These visits ranged from the serene Paradise of Deer to the educational National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, and the delightful A-Shin Choco Farm. Additionally, we explored the rich cultural heritage at the Pingtung Indigenous People’s Museum and concluded with a memorable BBQ party and beach tour. Having alumni around added even more to the friendly atmosphere, making the whole experience even more enjoyable for everyone involved.
The tour not only provided me with a deeper understanding of Taiwanese culture but also offered invaluable opportunities to exchange insights and learn from my international peers. I was particularly impressed by their curiosity about India, as they eagerly sought to understand its culture, society, and educational landscape.
Reflecting on this experience, I can confidently assert that the tour will remain one of the most memorable aspects of my education. It offered a perfect blend of learning and enjoyment, fostering friendships and cultural appreciation. I am fortunate and proud to be part of this trip. I look forward to supporting the international students with the next trip when the opportunity arises.
