Archeologist, documentary host, and Executive Director of American Institute for Roman Culture

Title : Creating online communities and conversation on the diversity of ancient Mediterranean cultures

Now more than ever it's timely to talk about the rich diversity of past cultures in the Mediterranean, and through a variety of social media platforms

it's possible to engage, teach, and inspire a global audience about the myriad aspects of the ancient cultures

tied to the what the Romans called "mare nostrum." Each social media profile has its own nuanced conversation

and community, which we can investigate through the recent work of the Ancient Rome Live platform

on new aspects of archaeology, history, historical preservation, principally on Rome and its sprawling empire.

Maritime Archeologist and Lecturer in Cultural Heritage Under Threat, Cranfield University

Title: A Roman Periplus: Maritime Archaeology from Rome to the Fringes of Empire.

Rome was a city connected to its empire through the sea and maritime archaeology is rewriting our understanding of the Roman Empire.

This talk discusses several maritime archaeology projects, beginning with Rome,

and expanding outwards to the fringes of empire – as far as Tanzania and the Indian Ocean.

The maritime archaeology of the Roman Empire shows a globalized world connected together by ships..

Title: Creating (for) A Virtual Classroom: Insights and Lessons from Reading Greek Tragedy Online

In this talk I will provide a brief overview of the experience of creating and hosting

“Reading Greek Tragedy Online” during the COVID19 Pandemic. I will explain how this experience

profoundly changed my understanding of the importance of performance, the contribution

of actors to ancient plays, and the meaning of tragic catharsis.

and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Birmingham, UK

Title: The Augustan Forum vs. the Subura: Demolition and Construction as Morality

(FOX HANDOUT HERE)

The moral messages inherent in the iconography of the Augustan Forum are well-known,

but what about the message sent to lower-class citizens by the construction of the Forum itself?

This paper will investigate the complex relationship between the Augustan Forum and the residents of the Subura,

and highlight the ways in which Augustus communicated his moral reforms through the partial demolition

of the notoriously disreputable district and its replacement with a grand Augustan space.
