We had the honor of hearing from these presenters:
PROGRAM:
Welcome remarks from our President, Bettina Joy DeGuzman (9:30am PST)
Professor Shadi Bartsch, University of Chicago, will be presenting "Vergil's Other Aeneid." Professor Bartsch has an Aeneid translation coming out this year! She is also currently writing on the reception of Greco-Roman Classics in China after being a visiting scholar in Taipei. She has authored and edited many books on antiquity and we look forward to this chance to hear from her in person. (9:35am PST)
We will have a pedagogy interview from Athens, Greece! Vasileia Vaxevani is the Educational Program Facilitator at the Athens Comics Library and also works with the Cycladic Museum of Athens. In a new outreach program, she teaches and offers psychosocial support within the Refugee Trauma Initiative to refugee children by using comic books, myths, and storytelling. (10:35am PST)
Dr. Rebecca Kennedy, Denison University, will offer “Women's Migrations in the Ancient Greek Mediterranean.” Her talk will reflect her recent, important work collecting data on the ancient immigration of women, ancient theories of race and ethnicity, and later reception of these theories and views. She co-authored Race and Ethnicity in the Classical World. (11:00am PST)
(LUNCH BREAK 11:40-12:00)
Dr. William "Greg" Thalmann, University of Southern California, will be highlighting the USC "Warrior Bards" Program. Several veterans who participated in his program will be performing recitations from Greek literature and describing how they were personally impacted by studying ancient Greek views on war, life, and personal meaning. (12:00pm PST)
We also look forward to Olga Faccani returning, this time joined by Dr. Michael Morgan, founder of
The Odyssey Project at UCSB. This full pedagogy presentation will focus on their new initiative,
the Trojan Women Project, that brings together UC students and incarcerated youth online to retell
Euripides’ tragedy. (12:55pm PST)
