Maurine Tippets Diary 1928-1930 age 15-16

Diary of Maurine Tippets

Age 15

Sunday, November 25, 1928

At 10:30 I went to Sunday School. After that I went home and read stories the rest of the afternoon. About 8 o’clock Kelly called up and said they would be right out. We waited for about three quarters of an hour and decided they wouldn't be out. Nellie said that we would wait until nine and if they didn't come by that time we would eat onions for supper. Well we waited until a quarter after and they hadn't come so we ate onions and as fate or luck would have it they came just as we were through eating. We did everything we could think of but we couldn't get the smell away. That was one night not very happily spent.

Monday, November 26

Just a plain old school. Nothing important happened all day or night.

Tuesday, November 27

Another school day. Nothing happened, only we took gym and two different teams played. I played both times and was on the losing team both times. At 7:30 I went to mutual. After that we went to a Bee Hive party. I had a pretty good time and spent the night with LaVoi.

Wednesday, November 28

I got up about ten to nine and ate breakfast and got ready for school. At ten o'clock I went to a program given by the high school faculty. It was as follows:

Song Mildred & Lucile

Prayer Dell Stoddard

Reading Genevieve

Sax Solo Dean & Mildred

Reading Violet Clark

Talk Walter Clark

Song Congregation

End

Mrs. Coffman went to Utah and so we didn't have any sewing teacher.

November 29, Thursday (Thanksgiving)

I went downtown and got Aunt Louisa and family. It was about two o'clock. I was just about starved but I wasn't when I got through. Two tables were set and dinner was laid for 27. After the feed LaVoi and I went upstairs and read True Stories. About five thirty they called us so we came down and Tab called me up and said they would be out sometime that night. So I took Aunt Louisa home. The lights on the car burnt out so I turned the park lights on. They helped a little bit but not so you'd notice. LaVoi come out with me anyway. Tab said Kelly were coming out with them. When we got home we prepared ourselves for meeting the boys. About seven thirty they came and we decided to go to the show. When we got so far we had a puncture and we decided we could go in town on a flat. After a while something got wrong with the engine but we let that go too. We went to the show. Lon Cheney in "While the City Sleeps." The comedy was "All Bear" and another about revenge.

After the show we went to Kelly’s home while Tab and Harold were fixing the car. They got a fellow with a Dodge coupe to bring us out. Imagine the crowd in that little coupe, there were seven. We got home at last though. Nellie, Harold, Tab and I decided to get out at our place and not go downtown. Like a big dumbbell, I had to run and break my heel off. They went home about one. Ah boy, what a good Thanksgiving. I sure had fun.

Friday, November 30

About ten I went to Montpelier. I saw the fellow that brought us out last night and he said maybe he would bring Kelly and take me to the show in Georgetown. But he didn't come and I didn't care much.

Saturday, December 1, 1928

Nothing important happened during the day. At 7:30 Tab called up and said they would be right out. They came about 8:00 and we went up to Montpelier to the serial show “Tarzan and Two Arabian Nights.” After the show we came home and had a flat tire but we let it go. Our Tee Hee Slumber Ha Ha Party heh heh.

Sunday, December 2

Some slumber party. I went to bed at eight this morning and slept until about eleven. We stayed home all day and night as Papa and Mama have not got home from Preston yet.

December 3, Monday

School and term exam in English I. They sold the place today, but Papa got it back again. I am sure glad. We had to walk home as I played (hob) with the truck and Papa had to take the sedan. Lloyd Burdock gave us a ride home and something blew out so we had to walk the rest of the way home. Papa hadn't taken the sedan because he got the truck started. I went downtown to get some things for Mama. Nothing else happened.

Tuesday, December 4

Another school day. We took science exams today. We went to Mutual. It was about 10 to 9 when we got home. They sure did have a short mutual.

Wednesday, December 5

Another day of exams - algebra today. I got a D. Isn't that a swell mark. 39%. Oh my, I reckon I had better study. We didn't do anything tonight so I won't write anymore.

Thursday, December 6

I got up this morning with the intentions of going to Pocatello today but Papa says its too cold without a foot warmer and if he had time he would get one, so I might go anyway. I got my mark in Science, which was C, and English, which was 85%. I went to Pocatello. I got two dollars and fifty cents’ worth of beads. We stayed out to Uncle Alma's at Tyhee. The night we got there it was dark and Uncle Alma had to referee a girls’ basketball game and he asked me if I would like to go over. Of course I did. When I got there I played basketball - they played girls’ rules the first time I ever played them. I sure did have fun. I returned home the next day.

January 1, 1929, Tuesday

Happy New Year. Well it hasn't been very fun for me. Tab called up twice and that wasn't so bad. There is a dance in Georgetown, Montpelier, Liberty, Paris, and Cokeville tonight but I am going to stay home and go to bed.

January 2, 1929, Wednesday

I went up to Montpelier today. I saw and talked to the following young men: Vernon Nelson, Vance Hancock, Jack and Lester Gardener, and Harold Lane. They sure did seem to have a lot to say. Jack shaved off his little boy’s strainer and it sure did improve his looks. I came home with Marcella Skinner about 4 o'clock.

January 3, Thursday

I went downtown today and had my hair cut. Nothing else happened.

January 4, Friday

We washed today but I didn't help because I was sick. Tab called up tonight. Uncle Less wanted the line so he politely asked us to get off. Well, Tab told him what he thought of him I guess. It sure made him hot and I don't blame him. It sure was fun to listen to the two quarrel. Ha Ha. Who put a nickel in you?

January 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9

I was sick all this time and nothing happened, only I stayed home the first three days.

Thursday, 10

I went to school today. Nothing of interest happened, only I took Gym.

Friday, 11, Saturday, 12

I went to school today. Nothing happened today but Tab called up and said they would come out. They went downtown to get LaVoi and got stuck. Tom Jensen pulled them out and charged them a quarter. We went to the show “The Singing Fool,” comedy, “We Taw Down.” After the show we started home and run out of gas. Well a fellow from Soda pulled us home. Those kids got stubborn and so we had another SLUMBER PARTY. Talk about fun. Papa towed them into town. The car belonged to Vance.

Sunday, 13

I went to Sunday School. We came home right after Sunday School and Aunt Louisa and family came out and LaVoi and I had a little Ha Ha sleep. I got up at six thirty. Nothing happened so I'll stop.

Monday, 14

School day and we took Semester exams in General Science. It wasn't too bad. Nothing else happened.

Tuesday, 15

School. We all met in room 11 and Mr. Clark announced some basketball games with Paris.

February 24, 1929, Sunday

It has been a long time since I wrote in you but you have been lost and so I couldn't write until now when I found you. We went to Sunday School this morning. LaVoi went over to Nounan Thursday to stay with the sick Mrs. Densley for a few days. I guess she will be back today. Tab hasn't been out since he came out with Vance’s car. He hasn't even wrote to me since about a month ago. I guess he would but I let LaVoi help me write a little bit of it and it made him sore I guess. Oh well I should worry. Ruth goes with Clyde. LaVoi with Delores and me "NoBody". I surely like him.

February 25, 1929, Monday

A school day. There is a dance in Nounan tonight but I don't suppose we will go. I sure want to though. Maybe, but we didn't go.

February 26, 1929, (Tuesday)

The girls have decided to play basketball with the Nounan girls. Nellie or I are neither one on the team.

February 27 (Wednesday)

Another school day and we weren't late.

March 11, 1929, Monday

I left you down here to school so I couldn't write my diary, but I will tell you what has happened during that time. We played with Nounan girls Thursday and beat them. I was sub and played forward. We are going to play our return game Wednesday. There is a dance over there Thursday. Maybe we will go. I hope so. We let them take our radio back because we are getting an electric stove.

March 13

The G.H.S. girls played the return game with Nounan today. Nellie and Verda Smith were the subs. Mr. Clark wouldn't let us others that did not play go over. The Big Bum. Nounan beat them 25 to 12. Isn't that awful. They are going to play over here next Thursday. I stayed out to Gerry’s last night. We sure had a lot of fun.

March 14

We rode to school this morning with Derricots. There was 15 on the sleigh. We took gym today. I have got a date tonight with G.R. reversed.

March 15, Friday

Nellie and I brought the team to school today the first time we have had to unhitch it this winter. There is an operetta tonight - the grade school is giving it. It surely was good. We went down in the truck. We sure had a load in the truck. There was about twenty in the back and four in the front.

March 16 (Saturday)

Mama and Papa went to town in the truck. Kelly came out and got the radiator and fan off from the Lone Special.

Sunday, March 17 (1929)

We went to Sunday School after we went down with LaVoi. Papa came and took us home. Gilbert went out with us. (Dick & Bacon), Elda, LaVoi, Ruth, Melva came out and stayed all day.

March 17

I stayed out of school to tend kids today while Mama went to the old folks’ party.

Tuesday, 19

I went to school. We finished reading Ivanhoe. The school inspector came down. We took Gym. Ted called up just as I got in bed but I talked to him anyway. Roy has got the mumps. Gerry took them in sewing class. Mona has already had them.

Wednesday, 20, Thursday, 21

G.H.S. is playing the Stand Bys today at 3:30 and we beat them 36 to 9 - sure some game. It snowed like old Harry and we had to walk home after the game. G.P. inverted called up and made a date with me for Sunday. We are not going to play basketball today with Nounan because the roads are too bad to come over on.

Friday, 22

Just a school day. Nothing very important happened.

Saturday, 23

Nothing very important happened night or day.

Sunday, 24.

I went to Sunday School and afterwards went out to Geraldine’s. Her mother was sick so she had to stay home with her. And Gladys walked down to church with me. Charley Clark came out there and stayed all day. Mrs. Anderson’s baby died with blood poison.

April 1, Monday (April fool)

Came to school with the milk man and he told us about Oliver Holmes’ boy getting shot. When we got to school the kids were deciding to go and leave school. We went down to the station and down to the water tank. We started back about 11:15 and got back to the schoolhouse about a quarter to 12. I stayed out in the afternoon to make a cake for Ruth. At eight we went to Aunt Louisa's to an April fool party. We came home at about 11.

Tuesday, April 2, 1929

Just an old school day. I started to make my spring outfit today. We played volleyball in the Gym today. Nellie and I stayed down to mutual. Will Hess had his radio over there. We heard some pretty good music. Girls! Girls! Girls! We walked home afterwards.

Wednesday, April 3

Papa brought us to school this morning. That’s all that happened.

May 14, 1929

It has been a very long time since I wrote to you diary but I will try to keep up for a while.

May 23

I got my report card and books and then came home. At night we went to commencement exercises. I helped sing alto in the Commencement Song. After the program the Board gave a dance for the seniors. Nellie & I came home with Uncle Bill Sto.

May 24, Friday

I went to Preston. I was rather sore because they said that they would stay to the dance in Montpelier but they didn't. We got to Preston about six and to Franklin about seven. Aunt Nora introduced me to Reta, Levelle's wife, first night in Franklin.

November 17, 1929 (Thursday)

It has been a long time since I wrote in this book but I will try to write down a few important things that has happened. The morn after I got to Franklin, Weldon came down and brought Morgan. I went for a car ride with them. The following Wednesday Wed came down and got me. There were four of us-Wed, Red, Howard Rawlings, and I. We went to the show in Preston. The next Monday we (Felix, Ed and the bunch of nuts and I went to the dance in Preston. I didn't like Felix so I came home with Aunt Nora and Uncle Bill. I don't know what he thought but I don't care. Howard had Helen to the dance.

Wednesday he called up and made a date with me for Saturday. I went in town with Uncle Bill and stayed to Grandma's all night. Howard called up Franklin but I wasn't there so he asked no questions and so I didn't go to a dance that night. I had the sideache anyway. He made a date with me for the next Saturday and I went up to Preston again with Uncle Bill. I went to get myself a new dress blue and tan. I surely like it. Howard called up Monday and asked me if I wanted to go to the dance in Lewiston Wednesday. Of course I did but Aunt Nora said I had better wait until Idaho day, June 15. He wanted me to go to the dance in Preston Thursday, but she said the same thing, so I stayed home.

Idaho Day we all got ready and went over to the celebration. At noon the whole relations came down to Aunt Nora's for dinner. We made chicken sandwiches. We were just finishing up when Howard came so I went with them. We went over to the celebration grounds and I went to put a scarf around Howard's neck and hit him in the nose and made it bleed. We went to the river. We went down a dropoff about 15 feet and broke the spring to Lewis’ car. We went to Preston in Rawlings’ car.

We took H. grandmother home and then took his family home. We went up town and the boys wanted us to go and have dinner but we didn't. We went and had a hot dog and root beer and a Milky Way Bar. About 7 o'clock we went to Franklin and I changed dresses and then we started around the mountain and the kids saw a porcupine so they got out and killed it. I had a headache so when we got to Franklin, Howard went and bought some aspirins but I didn't take any. Ada got sick so they gave her an aspirin and it made her go right off. We were going to Logans’. When we got to the Logans’ springs they thought she was asleep but she wasn't. When she came to she threw herself up and hit her head on the back of the front seat. We ask her if she wanted to go to the doctor and she said no, that she was alright. We went in the pool but she and Roy stayed out.

We went to Logan and had a sandwich and then went home about two. They came down next day and we went to the hot springs. It seems that I could only go twice a week so that was Saturday & Sunday. All but once and we went to Egypt to Kermit Herd’s wedding dance on Thursday. I guess I will have to tell you it but it was too bad. Howard called up about seven and said they would be down in an hour. Well they didn't come. I waited until 10:00 and they didn't come so I went to bed and as fate or luck would have it they came just as I got my light turned out. I said I wouldn't get up but Aunt Nora said I had better go and talk to him anyway, so like a dunce I got up and we went to the dance. I had a good time, but we were awful late. Another new acquaintance or two - Chris Greggerson & Rita Lowe.

Saturday, 21 June

Howard came down and got me and we came in to the show "On Trial." We just saw the last of it. We were going to the dance but Howard had a sore foot so we didn't go in. The car was pulled right in front of the dance hall so we could see everything. Another new acquaintance - Emma Gregerson (Chris's sister.) She sure is cute. She looks like Frank Lane. Ted Spackman went down with us as he played the harmonica. Boy he surely knows his onions about it. Ada went to the dance with Ray Sant and came back with Ray Lewis. We were going to go to Gentile valley the next day but Howard's dad decided to go along so he wouldn't go, the big dumbbell.

Chris & Dot, Clyde & Annora came down to Rawlings’ so we all went to the hot springs. Chris & Dot had a few words and worse but we got through the day alright. The next Saturday he came down and we went to a dance in Preston and the next day I went to Lava with Uncle Bill and Aunt Nora to the Perkins reunion. I surely had a good swim. The Koford kids were down too so it wasn't bad.

On the night of the third Howard came down and we went to the barn dance in the new garage on a cement floor. At 12:15 we went to another dance in the Persiana. We danced until about 3:30 and then went to go home and had a flat tire, so they drove up to a service station and we stayed there for about an hour, then we went and got a tire off Chris’ car and went and took Retta home and they got me to Aunt Nora's at just five. We were intending on going to Lava that day so I went back to Preston with them. Aunt Nora said I would have to go to Grandma’s and sleep first. I went to Rawlings’ and slept for about 2 hrs. At 11 o'clock I went up to Grandma’s and slept about an hour. Then we started to Lava and decided not to go because there had been a case of leprosy down there so we didn't go. We ate 2 boxes of candy that day. We went to the springs, then to the Theater at night. We went and saw the fireworks and then went home. Boy, I sure was sleepy.

Sunday Howard, Eva and Emma came down to get me and we run out of gas. Howard walked back to Whitney and got a gallon but they gave it to him in a dirty can and the car would not go. We decided to walk somewhere so we started out and got about halfway up the hill and Chris & Retta met us so they fixed the car and we went to Banida to take Emma home and had a flat tire. They fixed it and we went on our way. We went back around by Dayton and stopped at the cemetery and then home. A day well spent.

The next day, Saturday, Howard was going to come down but he couldn't get the car so we both stayed home. The next day they came down and we went up to Preston.

July 13

I went to Logan with Reta & LaVelle and the next day we came home. There were six in a Ford Roadster. Oh gee, for a crowd. We got here about five. Uncle George had come and brought Silva. Uncle Claude and Ruth, Sidney, Sammy and Marvin were here, and we six too. My, what a crowd and how. That night LaVoi and I went as loose ends to the hot springs with Nellie and Truman. We surely had some fun. We put twenty-two to bed that night. Ruth thought the bed was too crowded with five in, so she took her coat and went and slept in the car.

November 17, 1929

Hello my dear. How are you? Nellie & I went to the dance last night with Alvy. Had a pretty good time. We slept all this afternoon. Nellie and I milked all of the cows. I guess it didn't hurt us. There were 12. We are listening to the radio troup and planning our oyster supper November 20, one day after Nellie's birthday and one day before mine. I surely hope our plans work out alright.

20

We surely had some fun and I don't mean maybe. Served Lollypops and all day suckers.

December 21, 1929 (Saturday)

Dear Diary, it seems that I can just find you once a month so that is as often as I write. Nellie and I have been vaccinated but it is about all over now. I hope so. I got a Christmas card from Chris Gregerson tonight - one of the gang that hasn't forgotten me anyway. We are at present listening to the KFI midnight frolic. It is pretty good. Bob and Monty sung a few numbers and I guess they will sing more. Hope so. “Knee deep in flowers we'll stray. We'll keep the showers away.” We are going to bed at this time, three “Bells.”

December 22 (Sunday)

Here it is Sunday but that means nothing to me. I stayed home all day. Uncle Claude & Aunt Bess came over and spent a while here. Aunt Bess's mother died the 19 of this month and she had mumps so she couldn't go over. I surely feel sorry for her. (Au Revoir)

December 25

Merry Christmas. Hello. How you are? I'm fine. Santa was surely good to me this year. Well, I went to the kids’ dance at two. After the hop I went down to Aunt Louisa's and stayed until dance time. We walked over to the dance. The Vagabonds played. It was surely good music. I came home with one of them. He sure is a keen kid. He is Bus Murry, sure is swell.

December 26

I got home this morning at just about 3 bells. I got up at 20 to 12. I have my dress finished now. I like it better than I thought I would.

December 27, Friday

I went up town with Papa and got some things, came home and got ready for a dance. We danced until 4 A.M. Surely had some fun. Bus danced 6 or 7 times with me.

28

Spac said they were coming down to take us to the dance in Georgetown tonight. We will get ready and if he doesn't come, we will try and get the car. They are going to have an Electrical or Vitaphonic orchestra. I'd surely like to go. We danced until about 10:00 and then came home and listened to the Midnight Frolic.

January 13

There is going to be an operetta down here and I am the Belle of the Gypsy Camp. I have Dean Hoff for a partner. Isn't so bad. Ruth Tippetts got married a week ago today to Sammy Smith. Boo hoo. They shiveried them last night. They were surely dumb. They gave them a big dose of salts and then the girls put Ruth to bed.

August 3, 1930

The other day we were talking about my fellows and Papa said, “What if they all would come at once?” Well, Jack & Owen came out about one and we sat in the car until about two, and Weldon Rasmussen and Moory Jensen came but didn't stop. Nellie had given Weldon a date. We were sitting there and up drove Howard & Maurice. Jack and Owen left immediately. We went for a car ride with Howard and then came home and went downtown in our car. We stayed here until about five and then went up town and to the show "Run away Bride." Pretty good. We saw the comedy three times. Came home and the kids left about eleven.

(This little notebook was found after Daddy died and we went through letters and things. Notice how she spelled her name with two t's.)
