Hoist capable of lifting one of the 2-8-0s (Ottawa Citizen, 1899-08-05) was described in 1899, but installed some time earlier. It consisted of eight upright iron columns, four on each side, reaching across from the tops of which are four steel girders to which are attached an equal number of twelve-inch cylinders six feet long. From the latter four hangers descend and in lifting the locomotive these attach to cross-beam which have been placed under it. The operation of a small pump then puts the hydraulic mechanism in motion.
