While helping one of my students clean up her devastated home in Darra, no less than three members of the Bullockhead Creek Dojo turned up on separate occasions to help out. These people and all those who went to the aid of their neighbours are modern exemplars of the Way of Service, and deserve to be recognised for their generosity.
I will add to this list as I learn more.
Eddie spent several days assisting in the cleanup of Goodna, one of the hardest-hit areas of the Brisbane/Ipswich metro region. He assembled a team of able-bodied men with utes, pressure-cleaners and generators to maximise his impact.
John volunteered in a particularly unpleasant and thankless role, removing the heavy, smelly, bacteria-ridden carpet from homes in Centenary Village, Darra. In his usual unassuming way he made an important contribution to public health in the Village.
Chris rang to find out what he could do, and was immediately able to provide boxes, storage space and extra hands to help one of our members clear their possessions out of their damaged home.
Although she is only 17 and has just lost her home, Jade was brave enough to look after my children and take responsibility for my household while my wife and I went to help clear out the flooded portion of Darra. She was both dependable and gracious in a time of great personal grief and stress.
