Welcome!
Welcome to Troop 1430,
Boy Scouts is very different from Webelos! Most of the troop’s weekly meetings are geared toward planning and preparing for outings as well as working on advancement requirements and merit badges. Regular attendance at troop meetings and outings is an important part of the scouting experience.
The troop also asks that scout parents or guardians contribute by becoming an assistant scoutmaster, becoming a merit badge counselor or taking on a committee position or project. Experience shows that scouts who have a parent involved with the troop tend to stay with scouting longer and enjoy it more.
Yours in Scouting,
Troop 1430 Committee
HOW TO GET STARTED
1. Get on our email mailing list (Google Groups). This is our principal means of communication. Provide your primary as well as alternate email addresses to Mr. LeMaster or any Committee member or Scoutmaster.
2. Complete the BSA Youth Registration form and turn it in (we will also need a health form and a signed Code of Conduct as soon as is possible). Annual dues are prorated for new scouts depending on the month you join, and are currently set at $60 per year per scout, plus BSA national dues (for current Webelos who recently rechartered, this is simply a $1 transfer fee...for new or returning scouts, this is $16, again, prorated depending on the month you join).
3. Get a Boy Scout Handbook and a uniform. The best sources for these items are the Leesburg Hobby and Collectible Shop, the BSA on-line site, or the NCAC shops in Bethesda or Springfield. The Class A uniform is the traditional BSA uniform featuring a khaki colored shirt. Troop 1430 has a “belt up” Class A uniform policy. Scouts will need a shirt (with appropriate patches), a belt, and a neckerchief (provided by the troop at crossover). A BSA hat is not required but is recommended. Our Class B uniforms are maroon t-shirts imprinted with the troop logo, and can be purchased through the troop.
4. Start attending meetings on Tuesday nights—you will be welcomed! New scouts will immediately begin working on the initial rank of “Scout.”
5. Participate in troop events and go on a camp out (in particular the new scout camp out typically held in April or May)…this is important to do right from the start and provides the quickest way to meet other scouts and adult leaders.
