Conversation 7: What else are you studying?
Anna is talking to her new flatmate, Sujin, who is a fresher at Korea University.
수진: 안나 씨, 한국에서 뭐 하세요?
안나: 저는 한국어를 공부해요.
수진: 어디에서 한국어를 배우세요?
안나: 고려대학교 국제어학원에서 배워요.
수진: 그래요? 영어로 한국어를 배우세요?
안나: 아니요. 거기서는 한국어로 한국어를 배워요.
수진: 한국어 공부가 잘 되세요?
안나: 아니요, 아주 힘들어요. 그렇지만 정말 재미있어요.
수진: 안나 씨, 혹시 일본어도 아세요?
안나: 아니요, 일본어는 못 해요. 하지만 중국어는 좀 해요.
수진: 그럼 고려대학교에서 다른 과목은 안 들으세요?
안나: 아니요, 경제학이랑 정치학도 배워요.
Sujin: Anna, what are you doing in Korea?
Anna: I’m studying Korean.
Sujin: Where are you learning Korean?
Anna: At the Institute of Foreign Language Studies, Korea University.
Sujin: Really? Are you learning Korean through English?
Anna: No, there we learn Korean in Korean.
Sujin: Does studying in Korean work well?
Anna: No, it’s very difficult. But it’s really interesting.
Sujin: Anna, do you happen to know Japanese as well?
Anna: No, I can’t speak Japanese. But I can speak a little Chinese.
Sujin: So, are you not studying the subjects at Korea University?
Anna: No, I study economics and politics.

하세요 do <- 하다 + 시 (honorific) + 어 (plain) + 요 (polite). 시 is used when describing the actions of people one doesn’t know or people in senior positions (e.g. teachers).

영어로 in English. 으로 (로 after a vowel) is a postposition indicating the tool or method with which something is done. It corresponds to English ‘in’, ‘with’, ‘using’, through’, etc. Other examples: 영어로 이야기해요 ‘speak in English’, 연필로 편지를 써요 ‘write a letter with a pencil’, 지하철로 학교에 와요 ‘come to school by underground’.

일본어는 못 해요 I can’t speak Japanese. 는 hints that she can speak another language. 못 is a particle meaning ‘cannot’. Cf. 안 ‘not’. Both 안 and 못 are placed immediately before the verb. Note that 하다 can mean ‘do’ or ‘speak’.

다른 과목은 안 들으세요? Are you not taking other subjects? 다른 ‘other’. 과목 ‘subject’. 들으세요 <- 듣다 ‘hear, take’ + 시 (honorific) + 어 (plain) + 요 (polite)
경제학 economics
이랑 (랑 after a vowel) postposition meaning ‘and, with’. It is used in informal speech, like 하고. 과 (와 after a vowel) has the same meaning, but is is more formal.
정치학 politics
