BOSTON & MAINE RAILROAD STEAM LOCOMOTIVES

B&M 303 Built by the Manchester Locomotive Works in 1880. Renumbered 687 and Classified A. Scrapped by 1923

PHOTOGRAPHS OF B&M STEAM LOCOMOTIVES

This site contains photographs from my collection which illustrate all the letter classes of B&M steam locomotives. In 1911 the B&M adopted a class system which used a letter to identify the wheel arrangement followed by a number which indicated a specific group within the letter designation followed by a lower case letter to further specify a particular group. The use of the class system changed over time so that it is difficult to generalize about the meaning of a specific designation except that it identified the wheel arrangement and therefore the general use of the locomotive while the number gave an indication of the relative age or size of the engine. MINUTEMAN STEAM by Harry A. Frye is an excellent source of specific details.

K-8-c 2-8-0 2723 was built by Brooks in 1916 and scrapped in 1950.
