Cramlington Factory Supports Scouting Adventure

Cramlington based pharmaceutical manufacturer MSD have supported and helped young people across South East Northumberland by donating a grant of £3600 to Blyth Valley Scout District. The money donated by the company is to be used to purchase new equipment and materials to develop the Scouts Selby Wood campsite. Not only have the business provided financial support, the Cramlington operation chose the Scouts as their Environmental Support Initiative for the year giving over 450 man hours to help upgrade and work on the project. Employees volunteered to spend days on the campsite completing a range of maintenance tasks such as painting, building a new fence across the campsite, refitting of toilet facilities, clearing out drinking troughs, erecting fencing and much more.
Selby Wood Campsite is a greenfield, back to basics campsite, owned by the Scouts since 2007 and is situated just outside of Morpeth near Pigdon. It is used as a resource for young people to get out and about in the countryside, learn lifelong and traditional scouting skills along with a wide range of adventurous activities and teamwork challenges. The much needed upgrade will allow the site to be preserved for future generations and encourage more scout groups from across the area to use it.
Neal Armiger, District Commissioner for Blyth Valley Scouts said “It’s fantastic that such a big company are able to support us in providing adventure and challenge to young people. The campsite is a brilliant resource and by upgrading and maintaining it doesn’t just benefit our members today but also the hundreds of young people who will use the site in the future’.
Martin Inskip, Senior Director of Operations at MSD Cramlington added: “We are delighted that MSD were able to obtain this grant for the Blyth Valley Scouts and our volunteers have not only worked hard during their time at Selby Woods, they have gained valuable skills partnering with the Scout leaders to improve the Selby campsite for young people from the North East of England. It is MSD’s philosophy to give back to the community in which we operate and I believe the MSD Cramlington site live that philosophy. I spent one day at the site and it was very good to see the progress made by the staff. The work groups and the money provided by MSD has made a significant difference. It was a day well spent and all of the volunteers from Cramlington felt the same. I’d recommend volunteering to everyone.”
Employee Sean Devitt who works as a Specialist Business Consulting and volunteered to help with the project explained “I enjoy working on these projects, it gives you a real sense of achievement, not only with the work that you have done, but the knowing the opportunities these facilities give to young people”.
