R2 International Concert Series presents a recital by violinist Rhys Watkins (former member of the London Symphony Orchestra) and cellist Rowena Calvert (Head of Strings at Shrewsbury International School). Seven Last Words of Christ, Haydn

In 1786, Franz Joseph Haydn received a commission for an orchestral work to be performed for Good Friday service in Cádiz. He was asked to compose a series of slow, meditative “sonatas”, each relating to one of the seven last words of Christ during the crucifixion as outlined in the Canonical Gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John. Om & Friends will perform these “sonatas” in an adaptation for string quartet.
