Map Your Neighborhood is a program designed to help neighborhood blocks prepare for disasters. The program will help you do the following:
Learn the nine steps to take immediately after a disaster to secure your home and protect your block (15-20 homes on your street).
Create a neighborhood block map identifying locations of natural gas and propane tanks.
Create a contact list that helps identify those with specific needs such as elderly, disabled, or children who may be home alone during certain hours of the day.
Identify the skills and equipment each neighbor has that would be useful in effective disaster response.
Work together as a team to evaluate your neighborhood block during the first hour following a disaster and take the necessary actions.
Thurston County Emergency Management offers Map Your Neighborhood train-the-trainer courses for residents who want to organize their neighborhoods for emergency preparedness. For information on when the next course is scheduled contact Vivian Eason, (360) 867-2825, easonv@co.thurston.wa.us.
Information is available online at the Thurston County Emergency Management's Web site.
