Genesis 27

<UNDER CONSTRUCTION ...>

Potential title: "The Great Coup" ;)

Backdrop: Arguably, the most important and critical plan / mission ever (to save the world) has to now go through this family (Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, Esau). And, due to the nature of the mission, you would think that this family would be bunch of super-spirituals. But, wait let's see ...

Let us get some peek into the spiritual condition of the family. From Genesis 25, we learn Jacob would rather have his own brother Esau dead, so that he can overtake his birthright!! (Esau claimed he would die of hunger, and Jacob threatened not to help him unless he gave away his birthright). Then here Jacob lies in the name of God (v20), which is quite outrageous. Isaac ... Rebekah ... Esau is certified Godless, as per Hebrews 12:16.

Now, having known at the depth of brokeness of the family, why did God choose such a broken family as the torchbearer of the "arguably, the most important and critical plan / mission ever (to save the world) "?

...

This also shows that God's plan is dependent on God alone. Surely this family cannot be depended on for ... They seem to be too much ... Remember the covenant God made made with Abraham (Genesis ...), in which God walked alone ...

Discussion Questions for Bible Study:-

  • Arguably, the most important and critical plan ever (to save the world) has to now go through this family (Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, Esau). How much did this family deserve to be chosen for such a holy plan? (Reflect on their spiritual conditions). Why did God choose this family?
  • How much do you relate with the brokenness of this family? How much do you struggle with “trusting God” vs “taking things in your own hands” in your daily life? (Reflect on Jacob’s struggle in this regard)
  • Jacob used lies and deceit to overtake his own brother’s Esau’s blessings. And God still choose him, as successor of Isaac, over Esau in Genesis 28. So should we also lie and deceive, like Jacob did, to be successful in life?
  • Esau lost a lot here. From his life, what care can we take, so that we do not loose in similar ways?
