Potential Discussion Questions:-

  • Why would God KILL people who would come near to Him (Exodus 19:21)? Sounds very harsh & unloving?

This reflects the "just" aspect of God.

Remember it was not like this in the garden of Eden, before fall, where Adam & Eve could meet God and not die (Genesis 2,3). Sin has caused separation between the holy God and human, and made humans naturally deserving of God's wrath (Ephesians 2:3). So, when they come near God, as in Exodus 19:21, they receive the judgment they deserve because of their sins.

Recall these verses:-

Luke 13:- "Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” "

Romans 6:23:- "For the wages of sin is death ... "

Ephesians 2:3:- "All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath."

  • So, then, reflect on how easy or difficult it is to access God TODAY compared to those times. How much do you take it for granted?

  • Should we follow God’s law out of fear or love? Does Exodus 20:20 suggest we should follow out of fear? Given Exodus 20:20 and death threats from God (Exodus 19:21), how can one follow God out of GREAT love and not fear?

(a suggested answer in commentary of Exodus 20)

  • Chuck Smith writes "Now you remember when Moses was coming out with his wife Zipporah when God first called Moses to go deliver the children of Israel and Moses was heading down towards Egypt, and the Lord met Moses and almost killed him? So Zipporah knew what was going on. She quickly circumcised their boy, and she actually accused Moses of being a bloody man, and so forth …. Evidently at that point they-it wasn"t a pleasant scene. I mean it was quite a tiff between them. Evidently Moses just sent her back to her dad. "You go back to your dad, I"m heading on down to do my work in Egypt." So Zipporah his wife didn"t accompany him, nor his two sons Gershom and Eliezer. But now as he is come back into the area of Midian, Jethro comes out and brings his wife and his two sons. "
  • Exodus 18:10:- "Praise be to the Lord, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.". Remember our God is a jealous God (Exodus 20:4), He never takes a backseat! He always makes it clear that He is greater than all other gods.
