Afterschool Jam will be starting August 31, 2020. Meet in the lunchroom 3:45-5:00 pm.
One of BFMS Jam’ objectives is to guide students and support them in informal learning toward improvement in the application of knowledge in math, science and language arts. One of the ways we are meeting this objective is through our robotics program.
Mr. Johnson, our sixth grade science teacher mentors the students for our Jam team. He has been working with our robotics students for over three years now.
The Belle Fourche Middle School Jam Program’s Robotic team has participated in a robotics competition at the Sanford Underground Laboratory for the past three years. Our students along with the Spearfish Middle School students form teams of two to build and program robots. This year Teddy Long’s robot "Missed Opportunity" earned 245 points and First Place in the competition, second place had 140 points.
“Each team of two middle school students work with one BHSU mentor, meeting periodically since October to build and program robots that could complete the actions required to earn points in the competition. Robots are programmed to travel over ramps, drive through tunnels and deliver objects across the course.”
“The students toured the facility at surface-level and participate in science-based, problem solving activities throughout the day. “
We hope to continue this in the future, because it is an excellent way to get kids excited about STEM. It may inspire them to have a career in this area.
