We are proud and thankful for the mountain get away that Dahlonega has
always been and wants to stay in the future. We are very concerned about
the recent, unbridled development by the University of North Georgia. We
live here or moved here for the pleasant environment, the quiet, the safety,
and the peace.
There are more plans for tree removal by the college; more housing, and
even mountain removal. We understand there is no master plan for the
college expansion, only, ‘grow the college as much as possible.’ Such a
strategy leaves only ruin in its wake.
We strongly feel this is the wrong direction for the college and for our town.
We cannot remain a get-away town, an unlimited growth college town, and
a place that seniors will want to move to, all at the same time. We are
concerned about the air quality, the traffic, the soil erosion, the removal of
animal habitats. The quality of life in Dahlonega is deteriorating to the
point that home owners who moved here to get away, are already fleeing
due to the expansion building of the college. We reject the Atlanta sprawl
model that has left Atlanta with impossible gridlock. The citizens of
Dahlonega and Lumpkin County demand an ordinance to limit
development by the college, whose plans were never presented to the
citizens for their approval. We need to preserve our pristine environment
for the future and for all the good and right reasons. We have a petition that
will be presented to the College and the Commissioners that anyone can
sign. Petition is at Charley's Grocery across from the Nugget Offices on Morrison Moore Parkway.
