PETITION FOR A TREE ORDINANCE IN LUMPKIN COUNTY AND CITY OF DAHLONEGA
We, the undersigned, demand a Tree Ordinance in Lumpkin County, a better Tree Ordinance in Dahlonega, and enforcement for both. Under the current situation a site plan is all that is needed to remove a tree. The Lumpkin County commissioners have in the past refused to consider a tree ordinance. With the influx of residents and businesses we need to protect our trees, which are the natural habitats of the animals that live here, that protect our rivers. Our natural heritage constitutes our tourist industry and that should be protected first. We need to not change Lumpkin County in to an urban area that residents and visitors will want to flee. We want a Tree Committee formed to write a County tree ordinance. We want the ordinance to be approved, and be enforced. The Dahlonega Tree ordinance needs to be reviewed and improved, and be enforced.
Some goals a tree ordinance:
Promote conservation of tree resources. Clear cutting trees for profit should not be allowed.
We need to protect natural heritage sites like Blackburn Park, which was given to the people of Georgia by W.W. Blackburn to serve as a park. It was never meant to be cleared for ball fields, or for profit.
