FROZEN SEMEN PERFORMANCE
DOG BREEDING, WHELPING AND PUPPY CARE by GARY ENGLAND*
ON PAGE 324, FIGURE 28.4 SHOWS THAT THAWED FROZEN SEMEN DROPS 32% OF ITS MEAN SPERM VELOCITY IN THE FIRST 25 MINUTES POST THAW.
The value dropped from 125 to 85 šm/sec.
"Incubation in conditions similar to those found in the female reproductive tract results in the most rapid reduction in quality in thawed frozen semen".

Hello Tom,
Thanks for your email.
If you maintain at 37C sperm deteriorate more quickly than at room temperature, and this is even more pronounced for frozen thawed sperm. Usually I catheterise the cervix and have someone hold the catheter in place whilst I thaw the semen. If the catheter comes out I would hold at room temperature until I use it.
Best wishes,
Gary

Subject: question from Dog Breeding, Whelping and puppy care
Hello Dr England:
Just looking at your book ƬDog Breeding, Whelping, and Puppy Care.
Page 324, figure 28.4
How quickly should thawed/frozen semen be instilled via TCI procedure after thawing?
I am assuming that incubation is at 37C, does room temp make a difference (or is room temp incubation a no no)?
I am a retired Pharmacist so not totally clued in.
regards,
tom
