1st. TOUCHDOWN DAMAGE 1987

1987 EDMONTON TORNADO DAMAGE, FIRST TOUCHDOWN IN LEDUC, AB, DOG PARK (©T.O.TAYLOR)

Significance of this tree damage is that the two trees are healthy and show no signs of decay, are side by side, the same size, break is 6 to 8 feet above ground and no damage was done to closest neighbouring trees.

Damage occurred on my farm after the wall cloud passed over my house and I had reported to the weather office. No funnel was visible but I was able to see wind pulling on trees.

Bent trees on right side compared to straight vertical tree on the left. This damage was done in my woodlot after the tornado cloud had passed over my house. I could see a narrow circular area where the tree leaves seemed to be moving in response to wind. There was no visible funnel.

In the background is a tall tree that has been bent over by a suction vortex within the tornado. Along a two hundred meter pipeline corridor through my woodlot, two of these trees occurred. One at each end of the corridor, with the tip of the tree bent toward the other tree at the far end. This left me with the impression of the tornado width as it passed through the woodlot.

On the right is a sapling which broke about six feet above ground in the signature tornado damage fashion.
