BRITISH LABRADOR RETRIEVERS
Originated from the Newfoundland and St John's dog transported to Britain by fisherman, where they were developed into the dogs we now have. The British lab was bred to fit into a refined "Gentleman's Shoot", so was required to be Rock Steady and not move until spoken to, Seen, but not heard and Performed as told. Most prized was an exceptional dog who could trail and return with wounded game, especially if other dogs had failed to find it (an eyewipe). A display of the dogs intelligence, along with scenting abilities, was most desirable and greatly enhanced the prestige of the owner. Competitions between owners, held on shooting estates of England and grouse moors of Scotland, to see who had the best dogs, led to development of Field Trials. Generations of selective breeding honed trainability, responsiveness, marking, and scenting, making the British lab a delight to own. The labrador was brought back to North America where the Standard was altered in favour of larger dogs. Silver, charcoal, and white labs are crossbreed dogs containing the dilution factor(D locus) from the weimaraner breed and cannot be legally registered with the Canadian Kennel Club as purebred.
