Belle Isle Still Owned by the City of Detroit
Belle Isle, a 982-acre island, officially became a state park on February 10, 2014. Under a 30-year lease agreement signed by the City of Detroit, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manages the island park, while the City maintains ownership of the park. So the City is the DNR’s landlord.
The DNR’s mission says they are committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural and cultural resources for current and future generations.
