Student comments . . .
“Traveling to Belize was the perfect definition of a transformational experience. Through it, I witnessed, and took part in a culture few tourists ever get to relate with and made promises to change within.”
“I finally realized how important it was, when I had the opportunity to go to Belize and visit the orphanages."
"What mattered was reaching out to take another culture by the hand and giving them the respect, time, appreciation, and love that we take for granted so often in the United States."
Study Abroad programmes have been set-up in conjunction with colleges, educational institutions or universities. These programmes are designed to offer students additional earned academic credit for their assignments submitted, attendance and participation during an extended period of time (e.g. 7-10 days, 10-15 days, 2-weeks, 1 - 4 months or 6-months to one-year programmes). The Study Abroad - Student Symposium (SASS) partners with higher institutions to offer these same intentions to students studying in a cross-cultural and international setting of Belize, Central America.
It is the mission for 'Study Abroad - Student Symposium' (SASS) to offer educators and students positive learning experiences and opportunities while exchanging thoughts and ideas within a cross-cultural and diverse community of learners. Participants share their journey from an all-inclusive, culturally responsive setting.

Belizean International Symposium on Education (BISE) - Study Abroad Information
The 'Belizean International Symposium on Education' (BISE) which is scheduled for January each year, has been utilised as an 'assignment', or a 'cross-cultural experience', combined with a 'Study Abroad' programme. The International Symposium is often considered an additional venue for student learning as part of a study abroad programme requirement.
During the International Educational Symposium schedule, student's are given opportunities to attend and hear a vast selection of scholarly presentations. Students may visit local orphanages and interact with children, while volunteering their time through small work experiences. There will be involved with providing contributions and donations to local organizations while working with the children in Belize. The BISE staff may be useful to help with planning Study Abroad activities, excursions and other events.
In the past, Students have participated in a 'Poster Session' event (Please see: Poster Session Information section); which allowed for student engagement and was a way to depict a visual representation of student learning through cross-cultural experiences within a diverse country. Recently, this event has been changed to a basis 'Power point' presentation (University Day) event with students bringing a USB memory stick which is easy for travel and basically shares the same type of learning experience. A laptop and LCD projector will be available for presentations.
Registration & fees for students are listed in the: Pre-Registration section of this website.
