This HALO therapy can be delivered as a day case with each session lasting approximately 45 minutes.
The procedure allows us to treat high grade dysplasia effectively and avoid the need for oesophagectomy (surgery to remove the oesophagus).
HALO therapy is not without some risks.
The procedure can be quite uncomfortable. Very rare problems such as bleeding or puncture of the oesophagus can occur.
Afterwards some people may complain of chest pain, fever or feeling generally unwell, painful swallowing and difficulty in swallowing.
On average around 2-3 sessions of treatment spaced at 2-3 monthly intervals are required to remove the Barrett’s with high grade dysplasia.
In around 5% of people it will fail to get rid of the high grade dysplasia.

N.B. Since this presentation, "HALO" has been trademarked by a different medical company for different equipment. This means we now need to refer to it as an RFA (Radio Frequency Ablation) device or a Barrx (the manufacturer) RFA device.
