Radiofrequency ablation is a new technique which can burn the Barrett’s lining and is very effective at treating high grade dysplasia. Often this technique is combined with EMR for treating high grade dysplasia endoscopically.
Thanks to the amazing fund raising by Barrett’s Wessex and the generosity of those living in Wessex, we were able to purchase this equipment and offer this treatment to patients at the University Hospital Southampton.
Shown in this slide is the energy generator and the HALO 360 balloon (top right) which can deliver a circumferential burn to the Barrett’s lining and the HALO 90 (bottom right) which allows us to burn more focal areas.
The system has been specially developed to allow a very precise depth of burn, allowing the Barrett’s to be destroyed, but without damaging the deeper structures.

N.B. Since this presentation, "HALO" has been trademarked by a different medical company for different equipment. This means we now need to refer to it as an RFA (Radio Frequency Ablation) device or a Barrx (the manufacturer) RFA device.
