This is an active online opinion poll that is still working as of 06/23/2016, so click on the link above to cast your opinion. The now defunct Red Line has received over 69% in favorable responses on this poll. That amount of response may be one of many things that is needed to show a positive interest from the general public to help resurrect the Baltimore Red Line or at least a different Light Rail line for Baltimore in the near future.

FUTURE OF PURPLE LINE 05/25/2017 - The Trump administration is continuing to consider Maryland's Purple Line for federal construction aid even as the project remains stalled in a court battle, according to a budget document released Wednesday. Katherine Shaver of the Post reports the story. As for that court battle, the editorial board of the Post takes to task the recent ruling by a federal judge, saying it is an excellent candidate for reversal on appeal. Unfortunately, as the judge surely understood, that may not come soon enough to save the Purple Line, whose future is threatened owing to his decision.

Rahn on Wednesday ordered the companies contracted to design and build the light-rail Purple Line to immediately scale back pre-construction work, saying the state needs to cut costs while it appeals a legal ruling blocking the project. Katherine Shaver of the Post reports the story. Rahn also asked the Maryland Transit Administration to freeze hiring of oversight staff for the project and suspend state funding for county design reviews. And he directed Purple Line officials to limit further costs on the project except for "those of agreed necessity," writes Andrew Metcalf for Bethesda beat. The decision came a day after U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon's ruling to study ridership estimates for the project, even though he rejected the majority of a lawsuit brought by a trail advocacy group, reports Adam Bednar in the Daily Record.

316. MTA CHIEF OUT: Two weeks before the Maryland Transit Administration plans to launch sweeping changes in Baltimore's bus system, the head of the agency has been replaced. In a terse statement, state Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn announced Tuesday that Paul Comfort, who was brought in to run the transit agency in April 2015, has left his post, reports Michael Dresser in the Sun. Reached by the Post's Katherine Shaver Tuesday evening, Comfort declined to comment on why he left or whether it was his idea. He said only that he'd focused the past two years on the Baltimore bus system redesign and that the timing of his departure "is very interesting." He declined to elaborate. Rahn named Kevin B. Quinn Jr. as acting administrator of the agency Tuesday. Quinn previously served as director of Planning and Programming. Additionally, he served as Mid-Atlantic Regional Planning manager focused on transportation planning for STV of Baltimore, writes Bryan Sears in the Daily Record. 06/06/2017

318. STATE SEEKS STAY ON PURPLE LINE ORDER: The state of Maryland is asking the judge in the Purple Line case to stay a judgment and order that have blocked federal funding and stalled progress on the light-rail project. U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon doubled down Thursday on his rulings in an ongoing lawsuit that have blocked construction of the Purple Line and said the state has itself to blame for the project's funding problems, Andrew Metcalf reports for Bethesda Beat.

Wiedefeld, Faiz Siddiqui and Robert McCartney of the Post report. In a 29-page Metro reform proposal to be released today, the lawmakers, who are from Montgomery and Prince George's counties, call for significant governance and oversight changes, and separate, $170 million annual payments from Maryland, Virginia and the District to support Metro's long-term needs.

354. JUDGE TOSSES LAST PURPLE LINE ISSUES: U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon ruled that he will not reconsider the Purple Line's potential effects on air and noise pollution, after previously deciding the Federal Transit Administration and Maryland properly studied them. In an opinion published Tuesday, Leon wrote that the plaintiffs raised a voluminous number of alleged environmental violations and he ruled against the plaintiffs each time. The exception was for problems related to Metro's ridership decline and safety issues, which caused Leon to revoke the project's federal approval in August and later order a new environmental study to examine the issues. PURPLE LINE CASE: The federal government filed its brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals in D.C. in the long-running Purple Line case on Friday and rebuked two rulings by a lower court by saying the judge erred in his conclusions, reports Andrew Metcalf for Bethesda Beat. The brief prepared by Department of Justice attorneys is the first one filed in the appeal in the D.C. court. Larry Hogan (R) and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, Hogan spokesman Doug Mayer said. Andrew Metcalf of Bethesda Beat reports that Mayer said the state expects the federal full funding grant agreement to be signed in "the very near future." 396. TREE CUTTING FOR PURPLE LINE: A federal judge held off deciding Tuesday whether larger trees may be cut to build the Purple Line while a lawsuit against the rail project continues. The delay allows Maryland officials to decide - at least for now - when to clear-cut a popular recreational trail, Katherine Shaver reports for the Post. 402. VIEWS ON HOGAN TRANSIT PLAN: The Washington region - current population roughly 5.4 million - is projected to grow by 1.5 million people over the coming quarter- century. Faced with that influx, public officials don't have the luxury to engage in theological debate about the comparative benefits of transit vs. roads vs. new technology. If the region is to remain livable, prosperous and mobile, it will need more of all of the above. That's why Gov. Larry Hogan's recent big-ticket suburban transportation proposals - hundreds of millions of dollars to rescue Metro, and $9 billion to add dozens of miles of toll lanes to the Beltway, Interstate 270 and the Baltimore- Washington Parkway - are a good starting point, opines the editorial board of the Post. 411. DEFINING COST OF PURPLE LINE: For more than a year, Maryland officials have pegged the cost of building the 16-mile light-rail Purple Line through the Washington suburbs at $2 billion. So why does the Federal Transit Administration conclude in an Aug. 22 agreement to help fund construction of the project that the true cost is $2.4 billion - $400 million more? 424. HOGAN TOUTS HYPERLOOP: Gov. Larry Hogan - taking a cue from the big splash, low information PR strategy of Elon Musk - tweeted Thursday that Musk's Boring Co. is going to build a Hyperloop tunnel from Baltimore to Washington. "So, get ready," Hogan said in a rough video after adjusting his shades. Michael Laris of the Post reports that the Maryland Department of Transportation has given conditional approval to Musk's firm to dig miles of tunnel under state roads to be used for the privately funded project, (Elon Musk’s East Coast Hyperloop will launch digging in Maryland, state and company say 10/19/2017 - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dr-gridlock/wp/2017/10/19/elon-musks-east-coast-hyperloop-will-launch-digging-in-maryland-state-and-company-say/?utm_term=.8e0b09738877)
• It would be the first portion of the underground system that Musk says could eventually ferry passengers from Washington to New York, with stops in Baltimore and Philadelphia, in just 29 minutes. Maryland's approval is the first step of many needed to complete the multibillion-dollar project, Sarah Gantz and Erin Cox of the Sun report. (Elon Musk to start hyperloop project in Maryland, officials say 10/19/2017 - http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-hyperloop-in-baltimore-20171019-story.html
• The company plans to start tunneling northeast of the interchange at Route 175 and the B-W Parkway in Hanover, state Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn said Thursday. The Boring Co. has purchased private property to assemble its electric boring machine and to tunnel north toward Baltimore, reports Adam Bednar for the Daily Record.

426. MARYLAND DREAMS OF TRANSIT TECHNOLOGY: In an analysis for Baltimore Brew, Alon Levy, who has covered public transit issues, writes about Gov. Larry Hogan's enchantment with maglev and Hyperloop technology, writing that the maglev proposal won Hogan's earlier support after he rode a test track in Japan. Now it's the subject of a federally funded $27.8 million environmental review. But under scrutiny, do either of these proposals hold up as the right choice for Maryland's and Baltimore's transportation needs? Spoiler alert: The answer is no. 442. TRANSPORTATION INNOVATOR: Maryland is not known as a mass transportation innovator. Despite having the longest average commute times in the nation, its transit projects have traditionally produced mediocre performance for their massive costs, opines economist Scott Schaffer in a column for the Sun. But Maryland now has the opportunity to take a leading role in the future of transportation. Suddenly, not just one, but two high speed rail projects have been proposed for our area, each of which has the potential to transform the East Coast by link.
