152. PG BECOMES METRO HURDLE: 06/09/2017 - Prince George's County has emerged as an additional hurdle to Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld's long-term funding plan for the system, Faiz Siddiqui reports in the Post. The biggest opposition to the proposal for $500 million in annual dedicated funding was expected to come from Northern Virginia, but Metro board member Malcolm Augustine, who represents Prince George's, said Wednesday that he could not commit to supporting a resolution that will be presented to the panel today backing Wiedefeld's plan. The "Sense of the [Metro] Board" measure is designed to gauge where the region stands on the proposal.

175. METRO COST-SHARING KERFUFFLE: Robert McCartney of the Post reports that a disagreement between the District of Columbia and its neighbors over how to split the cost of fixing Metro is blocking the region's effort to agree on a plan for the transit system, raising doubts about whether along-term solution can be found this year, officials said. The argument roiled a meeting of top localofficials Wednesday at which D.C. 189. METRO CHAIR SAYS AGENCY NEEDS $25 BILLION: Faiz Siddiqui of the Post reports that, in a break with Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld, board Chairman Jack Evans says the agency should be pushing for $25 billion over 10 years to cover the system's long-term needs, significantly more than the $15.5 billion the agency chief has requested. 190. METRO's LONGTERM MONEY WOE: The Post's Martine Powers and Faiz Siddiqui report that as Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld rallies the Washington region to provide $15.5 billion in long-term funding, what's lost in the debate is that the money is only enough to cover the agency's most critical capital needs. What's missing is funding for projects and service that aren't deemed safety-critical but are important for system reliability and function - things that impact riders on a daily basis. 191. McAULIFFE REACTS TO HOGAN METRO PLAN: Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Thursday that Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan's proposal for funding Metro falls short of a long-term fix for the transit agency's financial difficulties, but he left open the possibility that the plan could serve as the basis for an interim solution, Robert McCartney of the Post reports. In a letter to Hogan, McAuliffe joined D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser in faulting the plan because it does not provide for a new tax or other permanent, dedicated revenue source for Metro. 197. HOGAN ATTACKS METRO CHAIRMAN: Faiz Siddiqui and Katherine Shaver of the Post report that, with the Metro board under fire for what many say is dysfunction and perceived parochialism in its ranks, a feud between the jurisdictions comprising it may be its undoing. Larry Hogan (R) on Wednesday threatened to push for the board to be disbanded if Chairman Jack Evans follows through with a threat to block the transfer of land Maryland needs for its light-rail Purple Line. 201. HOGAN PLAN REBUKED OVER METRO PUSH: A last-minute maneuver to push the Metro board to support Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan's funding proposal for the transit agency drew sharp rebukes Thursday, as representatives from the District and Virginia condemned the gesture as "political theater." Martine Powers and Robert McCartney of the Post report that just days after Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld released his proposed budget for the coming fiscal year - including a request for an additional $136 million to pay for capital projects - the flare-up highlighted the lack of consensus about how the District, Maryland and Virginia should come up with the money. 202. METRO BOARD ACTION COULD DELAY NEEDED PURPLE LINE DEAL: A Metro board committee voted Thursday on an 11th-hour measure that could delay a multimillion-dollar land transfer critical to the construction of Maryland's light-rail Purple Line, writes Martine Powers in the Post. Metro is expected to hand over to Maryland the land rights to properties at New Carrollton, College Park and Silver Spring Metro stations so Purple Line work crews can begin construction. The properties are valued between $24 million and $37 million. 203. PRESSURE ON METRO BOARD CHAIR: Faiz Siddiqui and Robert McCartney of the Post report that pressure grew on Metro board chairman Jack Evans to resign Thursday after he threatened to exercise a rarely used veto in a struggle between the District and Maryland that critics said exemplifies the parochial disputes hampering the transit agency. Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.) joined Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) in calling for Evans to step down. 204. METRO BILL: Ryan Marshall of the Frederick News-Post reports that Maryland would pay about $64 million more than it did for the current fiscal year under the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's proposed budget, which will not include any fare increases or cuts to service, but also will not include measures such as extending all trains out to the end of the Red Line at Shady Grove. 208. DC PROPOSES JOINT SALES TAX HIKE FOR METRO: D.C.'s sales tax would increase nearly a penny per dollar to fund Metro under a proposal unveiled in the D.C. Council on Tuesday. But the 0.75% tax increase would not take effect unless Maryland and Virginia enacted identical sale tax increases to support the struggling transit system, an unlikely prospect in the current political environment, Faiz Siddiqui reports in the Post.
