Streetcars in Baltimore: Past, Present and Future

Dear Friends and Supporters,
Can you imagine a time when gasoline cost only twelve cents a gallon, yet only one in ten Americans owned an automobile because they had a better mode of transportation? Well, consider that we have the option to go back to a time like this in our public transportation methods through the form of the modern streetcar.
The Past: The Streetcar Scandal
Streetcars had their beginnings in New York City in 1832. With success there, streetcar use soon popped up in other cities. In 1885, Baltimore was the home of the first streetcar powered by electricity.
By the early twentieth century, ninety percent of all city travel was by streetcar. Cities were designed with streetcar transportation in mind because streetcars were an affordable, efficient mode of transportation. But the cities’ reliance on streetcars would soon change.
The year was 1920 and companies by the names of General Motors, Firestone Tire, and Standard Oil created a holding company to buy streetcar companies across American cities, including Baltimore. They phased out the streetcars and replaced them with buses built by General Motors with tires made by Firestone - tires and engines that ran on Standard Oil gasoline.
Americans became reliant on automobiles or buses for their local transportation. It wasn't until the 1940's that the conspiracy perpetrated by the companies came to light. When the truth was learned, it became known as The Great American Streetcar Scandal.
The Present
The tracks from the old electric streetcar routes can still be seen on many streets in Baltimore, but buses continue to be the main public transportation service. However, buses can arrive late, or not at all, and have limited capacity, causing them to drive past bus stops full of waiting passengers.
Despite the price of gasoline edging towards $4 per gallon, people often choose to drive their own car versus taking a public bus. Bus routes are often long and confusing. With cars and buses clogging city streets, gridlock and smog have become common in most metropolitan cities.
The Return of Streetcars
More and more cities are realizing that streetcars serve local city travelers much better than buses. With well-designed routes, streetcars make a city more accessible. They are easy to understand, can carry more passengers, and are designed to run frequently providing a reliable alternative to buses or personal automobiles. Add in the style and their smooth ride, it's easy to see why streetcars have made a comeback in cities such as Portland, Tampa and Dallas. Baltimore hopes to be the next city to bring the streetcar back!
The Future
In yesteryear, Charm City thrived with people regularly riding streetcars. Today, supporters of the Baltimore Streetcar Campaign envision a reinvigorated city with a well-established streetcar system. Gone will be the bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic, as cars and buses make way for environmentally friendly streetcars that efficiently and safely shuttle residents, students and tourists.
