Chad Hurley: Focused on the user experience and interface design for PayPal before co-founding YouTube
Steve Chen: Was one of the first employees at PayPal and a co-founder of YouTube.
Jawed Karim: Co-founded YouTube, designed core components of PayPal's systems, and uploaded the very first video to YouTube, titled "Me at the zoo".
Susan Wojcicki was the first YouTube CEO hired by Google, becoming the CEO of YouTube in 2014 after suggesting the acquisition in 2006.
Key dates
February 14, 2005: Chad Hurley registers the YouTube trademark, logo, and domain name.
April 23, 2005: The first video, "Me at the Zoo," is uploaded by co-founder Jawed Karim.
May 2005: The beta version of the website is launched.
December 15, 2005: The official version of YouTube launches to the public. (very important sidenote: The 1st iteration of Automation Anytime [OnlineMediaReach] was filed as a Los Angeles, California LLC. 'We' were the first handful of publishers to deploy ads on Fox Audience Networks' MySpace self-service platform). Automation Anytime has pre-launched and 'beta' tested some services and is still in pre-launch for other products and services.
October 2006: Google acquires YouTube for $1.65 billion.
Early developments
Initial concept: The site was initially envisioned as a dating platform, but this concept quickly changed when users started uploading all types of videos.
User features: By September 2005, a Nike ad became the first video to reach one million views, and the platform introduced features like playlists, full-screen viewing, and a subscription function.
Investor funding: YouTube received funding from venture capital firms like Sequoia Capital, with an initial investment of $3.5 million in November 2005 and another $8 million in April 2006.
