I have always tried to promote method development and create method awareness. A couple of things that I've done in this regard are events that get the community involved in creating and using methods. Below are two of the main events that I started.
Method Development Competition: This is a competition where members of the community compete to create a method which satisfies certain conditions. So far each competition has been focused on creating the fastest method. One of the competitions being for 4x4 methods. However, competitions in the future may be about who can find the method with the lowest movecount, fewest number of algorithms, or other interesting conditions.
Method March: During the month of March, the community uses a method other than their main method. This can be 3x3, another puzzle, or another event. The goal is to give underused methods some use and help show the community that there are fast methods besides the most popular ones. Members of the community currently, like everything else in life, follow the path of least resistance. CFOP is the current path of least resistance for two reasons:
It is the easiest speed oriented method to get started with thanks to the many tutorials.
With other methods, newcomers may fear that choosing it won't allow them to achieve world record times.
Lack of quality resources and fear of other methods not being fast enough prevents them from going down the path of other methods and pushes them down the path of CFOP. Method March was designed to have everyone try something new to show that other methods have just as much, or even more, potential.
