Neurobiologiste, j’ai étudié la plasticité fonctionnelle de réseaux neuronaux dans différentes situations physiologiques, recherchant depuis la molécule jusqu’à l’organisme entier, les mécanismes sous-tendant une fonction physiologique ou un comportement donné. Dessiner, peindre, fut longtemps le moyen d’expression de ma sensibilité visuelle, mis en retrait des recherches mais permettant d’établir des ponts avec les artistes côtoyés. En Science, ma motivation est de comprendre, dégager des principes, établir un savoir vrai pour appréhender étape par étape le monde du réel. L’intuition indispensable au progrès n’a force de vérité qu’une fois démontrée objectivement. Le monde de l’Art apporte une dimension spirituelle et émotionnelle libre où l’expression n’est pas jugulée par le quantifiable et où l’imagination peut s’enrichir de métaphores visuelles. Lorsque l’œuvre d’un artiste interpelle mes connaissances scientifiques, mon regard semble percevoir l’indicible, ma raison ébranlée interroge et tente d’interpréter. Mais la réponse de l’artiste va toujours au-delà de l’analyse scientifique, car il transmet sa perception du monde exacerbée par une acuité vigilante. C’est par ce dialogue que j’ai pu accéder au monde sensible de Christophe et comprendre les messages qu’il voulait transmettre.

La capacité des animaux à nous transmettre des messages d’alerte a naturellement émergé des discussions avec Christophe. Ici, la force d’impact du message visuel ne peut être dissociée du support de gravure, le bois. Les fibres ôtées en 3D, la façon de les encrer et le choix de la couleur ont un langage propre destiné à enrichir l’expression féroce du loup. Le premier regard scientifique perçoit la domination et la férocité du loup : oreilles pointues dressées au-dessus de la tête, mâchoires puissantes, dents acérées, pattes en extension, larges pieds, queue touffue droite et regard fixe en direction d’une cible. Le halo blanc intense et lumineux qui l’enveloppe est la manifestation d'un champ d'énergie et d'une force vitale sources d’une aura pourtant immatérielle. Les griffures blanches et oranges ajoutées y matérialisent l’odeur puissante produite par les glandes sébacées, perceptible lorsque les poils de garde de son dos sont hérissés. Elle donne au loup une empreinte spécifique. La puissance de suggestion de l’artiste, sa capacité à matérialiser l’invisible sont assujettis à des gestes précis et mesurés de gravure dans les fibres du bois, puis à la façon de les encrer. L’orange renforce le discours du noir et signale le danger. L’expression finale voulue par l’artiste, n’est plus celle du loup alpha mais bien l’image de la dévoration. Il alerte les Hommes sur le ré-ensauvagement de nos forêts par les espèces décimées, le retour du primitivisme lié à une énergie destructrice, imageant la férocité de notre monde actuel.

Rewilding Alert

As a neurobiologist, I study the functional plasticity of neural networks in different physiological situations, looking from the molecule to the whole organism, the mechanisms underlying physiological function or a behaviour. Drawing, painting, were for a long time, means of expression of my visual sensibility - put aside by my research - but allowing to build bridges with the artists. In Science, my motivation is to understand functioning, to establish postulates with a claim of truth in order to reveal the complexity of the real world. Intuition becomes truth once objectively demonstrated. The Art world provides a spiritual and emotional dimension where free expression is not impeded by the quantifiable and where the imagination can be enriched by visual metaphors. When the artist’s work challenges my scientific knowledge, my eyes seem to perceive the unspeakable while my shaken reason questions and tries to interpret. But the artist's reply always goes beyond my scientific analysis, because he transmits its own perception of the world, exacerbated by his wakeful acuity. It is through this dialogue that I could access Christophe’s sensitive Art world and understand the messages he wanted to transmit.

The ability of animals to send us alert messages has naturally emerged from discussions with Christophe. Here, the impact force of the visual message cannot be dissociated from the engraving support, the wood. The fibres removed in 3D, the way to ink them and the choice of the colour have a clean language intended to enrich the fierce expression of the wolf. The first scientific gaze perceives the domination and the ferocity of the wolf: pointy ears erected above the head, strong jaws, sharp teeth, extended legs, broad feet, straight bushy tail and the gaze fixed towards a target. The intense and bright white halo surrounding the wolf is the manifestation of an energy field and vital force, sources of an aura yet immaterial. In this aura, the white and orange scratches materialize the strong smell produced by the sebaceous glands, noticeable when his back-guard hairs are bristling. It gives the wolf a specific imprint. The power of suggestion of the artist, his ability to materialize the invisible are subject to precise and measured etching in the wood fibres, and then to his way of inking. The orange strengthens the speech of black and signals danger. The final expression wanted by the artist, is no longer that of an alpha wolf but the image of devouring. It alerts humanity on the rewilding of our forests by decimated species, the return of primitivism linked to a destructive energy, imaging the ferocity of our world today.
