This image is an interpretation of the melting ice in the Arctic Sea. I was inspired and saddened by the loss of habitat for native species, especially polar bears. They now have to swim long distances between ice loes. “In completely open water, or in an environment free of sea ice, however, polar bears cannot survive for very long; they are entirely dependent on sea ice from which to hunt from.” Here they are not pictured; I did not want to give a recognizable scale to the piece, but rather to present it as an alien landscape. It is inhospitable to us, but is home to the bears.
