I'm a touring artist/musican. Lead singer and guitarist of a band.
I'm a self taught guitarist. I began to learn at the age of 16 and eventually began to write my own songs. I started to play in different bands or play with other artists. By my early 20s I was working a full time job in retail management to support myself and my music which was mostly a side thing. I started a band and we financed our own tour and music until we got picked up by a label. Now I do the band full time but I am still working to strengthen myself as an artist and continue to be creative and to balance the life of being an artist and finding ways to make it a lucrative income so I may continue to do this for the rest of my life.
Yes, it is very hard. There are some good pay days but those days have to be stretched out for a long time and in between there are many odd jobs. But the great thing of being creative is having a community of other creative friends in different mediums. For example, I am currently working as an actress in a horror film. This is a very small role but there is a little bit of pay in it as well. It's also another way to stay creative and to help another artist at the same time.
I never had a job that I didn't learn something from. I worked in a dry cleaning place. I worked in my friend's bookstore the previous winter. I've mostly worked retail. I was a manager at American Apparel for a few years which I do believe taught me so much about business and now when I'm dealing with my own merch with my band, I really am grateful for the retail experience even tho looking back it wasn't the healthiest job.
When I do a job, it doesn't matter what the job is, I always find a way to stay busy and I always find something to take from the experience. I believe you should always put in your best effort into what you do. Luckily right now I am about to enter a touring cycle so I will be busy and maybe winter I will look for work depending on how successful this tour is.
The only few things I could say that could be advice are to not waste your time and not let anyone waste your time. That is the only thing that money can not buy. Also, don't wait for inspiration to "come to you", find it. It's everywhere you just gotta connect with the world. And lastly, I'd say be passionate and be grateful. Theres always something to be grateful for.
