I teach dance, perform as a dancer, percussionist and drummer and present and direct productions. I do all this full-time, nationally and internationally.
I simply followed what my spirit wanted to do, which was be an artist. I was on a completely different career path that was needing more and more commitment but all I thought of was dancing. I finally decided it was too urgent to ignore and left my life to pursue and study dance, trusting I could always come back to that other career.
Making your creativity a business can be a struggle. Sometimes you need to sell yourself in a way that is not authentic so you can pay the bills. But it’s just like any other job-and I’d rather do my job than sit in an office.
When I am in the process of creation, I feel freedom. It has taken many years of “doing” to attain fluidity, but even when it was teaching myself the process, I felt everything, all the emotions, negative and positive, and all the effects physically and spiritually. The process of creation feels like I’m living the fullest life possible.
It's not always glamorous!
Sometimes the artist's changing room is a bathoom stall!
We need more creatives in the world. Just do it.
