Accreditation is a means of ensuring that Lay Ecclesial Ministers (LEMs) - which includes Pastoral Associates, Pastoral Workers, and Chaplains working through archdiocesan bodies - have recognised and appropriate training for their roles.
For the Accreditation Standards see section below.
Whilst accreditation is not always demanded for some positions, APMLM supports its members in gaining and retaining accreditation, where it is available, for the good of their professions. For some roles it is not uncommon to start in the role whilst studying towards gaining accreditation.
LEM Accreditation (with the exception of Supervision) is currently governed by the Office of the Vicar General at the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne (CAM).
For enquiries about Accreditation, contact the appropriate person listed on the CAM Contacts page.
Also feel free to contact an APMLM representative to talk about your situation regarding accreditation.
The standards for accreditation for all Lay Ecclesial Ministers - Pastoral Associates, Pastoral Workers and Chaplains - are set out in the Archdiocesan publication Lay Ecclesial Ministers: Accreditation Standards. This document is being updated and is not yet available on the CAM website, but a copy can be requested from the Archdiocese (see above).
In the meantime the 2016 version of the Accreditation Standards is still accessible through the web, and is a good guide to the current requirements:
Lay Ecclesial Ministers: Accreditation Standards (2016).
Initial Accreditation is for a period of 3 years.
Once accredited, certain requirements must be met, and documented, for you to maintain accreditation and be eligible for re-accreditation. The exact requirements depend on your status and the hours you work (see Section 1.5 of the Lay Ecclesial Ministers: Accreditation Standards (2016).
Regular Supervision - up to 9 sessions per year.
Ongoing Personal Formation and Professional Development - up to 30 hours average per year.
See Supervision & PD for more details of requirements.
Re-accreditation is for a period of 5 years.
