Dr. Anshuman Khare is Professor for Operations Management at the Faculty of Business, Athabasca University (Canada) and currently is the MBA Program Director (Interim). He holds a D.Phil degree from the University of Allahabad (India). He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree before going on to get his Master of Business Administration with a specialization in Operations Research (OR), also from the University of Allahabad (India).Earlier in his academic career, Dr. Khare worked as a Research Scientist (Management) for the University Grants Commission, India at the Motilal Nehru Institute of Research and Business Administration (MONIRBA), University of Allahabad (India). He currently teaches operations management, supply chain management, innovation and technology management, sustainable development, and quantitative analysis.

Dr. Khare joined Athabasca University (AU) in January 2000 after finishing his term as a Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung at the Johannes-Gutenberg Universität Mainz, Mainz, Germany where his research focused on changing operations management strategies due to increasing awareness about climate change and the emergence of regulations to mitigate climate change in the European Union (with special focus on automobile industry). He continues to work on similar themes in different industries in Canada and around the globe. Dr. Khare has availed of two fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, in 1998-2000 and 2007-2008.

Earlier, Dr. Khare completed his post-doctoral research at Ryukoku University, Kyoto, Japan on Japanese Government's Monbusho Scholarship (1995-97). The main theme of his research was Just-in-Time business philosophy and responsible manufacturing. Sub-themes included cutting waste and increasing efficiency and resource use in the automobile industry.

He has published three books and eleven edited books, over 125 research papers and articles in refereed journals, made presentations in over 50 conferences abroad and was listed as an Academic Expert in the areas of environmental strategy and sustainable development, environmental manufacturing, and responsible manufacturing on Environment Canada's Academic Expertise Database (Government of Canada).

Among Dr. Khare's academic responsibilities are: coaching Operations Management, Services Management, Sustainable Development & Business and Technology & Innovation Management courses online; serving as academic area manager for these courses including energy management; preparing new courses; developing case studies; and contributing to new methods of delivery of courses via electronic media. Dr. Khare is also involved with delivery of the residential programs in Supply Chain Management and has delivered international electives in Germany. Dr. Khare also leads the development of stream of short courses in operations management (with special focus on improving productivity and supply chain management) for AU's Leadership and Management Development (LMD) Program.

Dr. Khare has served on various committees at Athabasca University and Athabasca University Faculty Association (AUFA).

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

In 2003, Dr. Khare was awarded the Craig Cunningham Memorial Award for teaching excellence by Athabasca University as a testament to his commitment to exceptional online education. 

Dr. Khare has been recognized for online teaching by University of Liverpool in 2009 and 2013.

In 2015, Dr. Khare was awarded Athabasca University Graduate Students’ Association (AUGSA) Outstanding Distinction Award (2015) for AU Faculty. AUGSA provides the Outstanding Distinction Award for Faculty to acknowledge and honour AU faculty members who display exemplary leadership, support, and engagement with graduate students.

In 2016, Dr. Khare was nominated for the CAFA Distinguished Academic Award by the City of St. Albert, Humboldt Association of Canada and Athabasca University.

OTHER KEY POSITIONS

Dr. Khare served as the MBA Program Director (from February 2015 to June 2016) and was on the Athabasca University General Faculties Council and Faculty of Graduate Studies Council representing the Faculty of Business, Athabasca University.  July 2020 to June 2022, he served a second term as Chair for Department of Finance, Economics and Operations Management (having served earlier from January 2011 to June 2013).

In the past, Dr. Khare served on Athabasca University Academic Council, Athabasca University IT Strategy (Learning and Research) Committee and was on the executive of the Athabasca University Faculty Association (AUFA) as the Secretary of the Union. He was also on the Steering Committee for the Integrated Learning Centre for Athabasca University's Edmonton-St. Albert location. Dr. Khare also served on the Academic User Group for the launch of the Integrated Learning Environment (ILE) at Athabasca University.

Dr. Khare launched and managed the Online Centre for Corporate Stewardship with Dr. Michael C. Mayo (2003) and later with Dr. Terry Beckman (till 2017) as part of his research initiative.

Earlier in his career, he served as Staff Officer to the Chairman of the International Airports Authority of India at Delhi, India where he was responsible for developing and managing airport information systems, introducing new technologies for passenger and aircraft handling, managing airport emergency services, reviewing and assessing the work of various departments, inspecting and monitoring airport services, and acting as liaison with officials involved in projects under the auspices of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the World Bank.

Dr. Khare was associated with the University of Liverpool, Liverpool (England) and Stuttgart Media University, Stuttgart (Germany) as a part-time academic and supervises doctorate and masters dissertations.

RESEARCH NETWORKS

Dr. Khare held the position of Treasurer for the Humboldt Association of Canada (HAC) from 2001 to 2017. His activities with the network of Alexander von Humboldt Fellows in Canada included doing information sessions for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany for the promotion of research in Canada and Germany and the organization of conferences with the Foundation and the German Embassy in Ottawa. He also coordinated field trips to Germany under the auspices of international schools offered by Athabasca University.

Dr. Khare is a member of the Steering Committee of the Alexander von Humboldt Cities and Climate Change Network of researchers and practitioners (established in 2010). The network aims to inform scientific and policy discourses and promote research and innovations based on exchange and cooperation among network members. The network also aspires to propose thoughtful solutions to the interrelated issues of urban development, energy, and global climate change.

Dr. Khare is a Champion for Athabasca University on the Research Network for Sustainable Business. The Research Network for Business Sustainability "facilitates business sustainability in Canada through research and evidence-based management." Members of the Network are involved in research relating to sustainable development, social responsibility and ethics within organizations. The infrastructure provided by the Network is expected to foster research collaborations, cross-sector partnerships and knowledge transfer. The Network is an initiative of Richard Ivey Business School and partly funded by SSHRC.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

St. Albert Public School Board & Government of Alberta

Dr. Khare served as a Co-chair of Elmer S. Gish Elementary / Junior High School, St. Albert AB (2020-21).  

Dr. Khare served a one-year term on Minister's Parent Advisory Council, Government of Alberta (2021-22).

City of St. Albert

Dr. Khare recently completed a two-year term on the City of St. Albert Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) (2020-21). For 2021, he was elected as the Chair of the Committee having served as the Vice-Chair in 2020. The Environmental Advisory Committee provides a vehicle for the flow of strategic advice and expert information between and among the public, City administration, and Council, with an ongoing focus on best practices and the development and implementation of the City's environmental policies, strategies, and initiatives.

In 2021, Dr. Khare received the Long Service Recognition Award from the City of St. Albert

From April 2014 to August 2016, Dr. Khare served as the Vice Chair of City of St. Albert’s SMART City Master Plan Steering Committee. With its sterling reputation, strong technological foundation, and numerous strategic advantages, St. Albert is positioned to become one of Canada’s leading SMART Cities.

Dr. Khare served as a member of the Economic Development Advisory Board (EDAB) for the City of St. Albert from 2013 to 2015. The Board was established in 2013 with a small membership and focused terms of reference. EDAB was been formed as a panel representative of the community’s interests to advise the City of St. Albert, specifically the Economic Development Division, on how to best achieve their economic goals.

In 2012, Dr. Khare served as vice chair of the St. Albert Economic Development Advisory Committee (SAEDAC) and continued to serve as a committee member till the City Council dissolved SAEDAC in June 2013. In earlier terms, he chaired SAEDAC's sub-committee for Infrastructure, Policies and Sustainability. SAEDAC was an advisory committee to the City of St. Albert Council which was established in 2000 to advise Council on matters pertaining to economic development.

Northern Alberta Business Incubator (NABI)

Dr. Khare was appointed Director and Member of the Board of the Northern Alberta Business Incubator (NABI) in June 2012. NABI works with aspiring entrepreneurs and small businesses with advice on quality business planning programs, one-on-one business coaching and mentoring to meet specific goals. He served three terms as Vice Chair from 2014 to 2017 and one year term (2017-18) as  Chair of NABI Board of Directors. After a short break, he served as the Interim Chair of the Board for the Northern Alberta Business Incubator (NABI) from May 2022 to March 2023. He remains a lifelong member of the NABI Society.
