Self, Sovereignty and Solitude for Women
“A space must be maintained or desire ends” —Anne Carson, Eros the Bittersweet p. 26
Do you sacrifice your feelings and real needs at the expense of your soul life?
How do you envision your house of the psyche? Is it big enough for your true self?
Sovereignty and solitude are regenerative resources for life. In this four-part online immersion program for women, centered in the life-affirming context of depth psychology, transpersonal practices, and Jungian ways of knowing, we invite you to explore the gentle cultivation of solid self containment and grounded presence as we deepen our capacity for experiencing meaningful solitude. Whether we are parents, partners, or on our own, the shifting cataclysmic reality of our time demands that we embrace change, ambiguity, and loss, releasing self-sabotage to voice our truth.
This program draws from the rich resources of myth, embodied soul experience, story, fairy tales, and women's literature. Hestia, goddess of home and hearth, lives at the center of our ever-glowing inner fire. In the spirit of Hestia, our soul calls us home; all parts of ourselves are welcome. A depth psychological approach to our loving connection with others equally recognizes its opposite: separation and solitude, masculine and feminine; both aspects are valued for gathering in the psyche’s creative focus. The intention woven into every moment of our time together in this program is to encourage an enduring presence of eros, our natural life force, in healing communication with the everyday self, the transpersonal Self, and with the soul of the world: the anima mundi.
In the sanctuary of contained space, each online session will include presentation, reflection and interactive time in small group conversation. Over four weeks, we will deepen into four areas of inner feminine knowing:
Session One: understanding our relational potential with the transpersonal/Jungian Self
Session Two: stories, images, experiences and capacities that root our beingness in true sovereignty
Session Three: how sovereignty can enable spaciousness and rich, generative solitude
Session Four: ample time for integration
In between sessions, there will be opportunities to apply self-designed practices of Self, sovereignty and solitude. Participants are encouraged to chart dreams, draw out emergent images, and observe everyday interactions with others (including other-than-humans). By strengthening our boundaries and claiming our sovereignty we draw the world into ourselves, paradoxically becoming more available for intimacy with all of life. Accessing our true nature and unique sensitivities to others, we can then show up with our voice and integrity to respond creatively to the complex challenges of earth and human systems in flux.
Thursdays, May 22 - June 12, 2025, 1-3pm Pacific time.

Spaciousness and Self-Containment
In an uncertain, hyper-masculine, polarized world, we may feel overwhelmed or push ourselves to keep going while feeling out of touch with our deepest selves. We can call on inner and outer allies, using our intuitive and somatic discernment to strengthen ways of knowing that prioritize our soul-making, rooting into a vision of wholeness sustained by a subversive, caring and practical love.
Entering into solitude, grief, self care, and setting boundaries to protect healing processes constitute our natural birthright. In our time together we will draw from literature, myth, film, our own stories, fairy tales, and Jungian concepts including the role of eros and the feminine in individuation. We’ll look at archetypal images of sovereignty: Queen, Hestia, Kore goddess, Artemis and others; and the reconciliation of feminine/masculine in the psyche. Fully inhabiting our feminine integrity, we will invite a re-imagining of grounded spaciousness and self-containment that nurtures well-being and generative relationships.
Imagination and Presencing
We will consider perspectives on loneliness, loss, energy hygiene, health, technology and cultural anxieties as portals to new ways of knowing ourselves in the context of a richly entangled world involved in mysterious transformative procesess. Our symbolic imagination lives as a real location in space and time. It mediates the relationship between ego self, others, and the gods.
Developing our relationship with solitude can substantiate inner sovereignty— our divine right to occupy our inviolate beingness as a sanctuary; a vessel of transformation that nurtures ourselves and nurtures kinship with the human and the earth community. This integrated autonomy is not static but a sacred presencing process that beckons us into reception of an ageless transpersonal sense of Self, the great circle of life, death, and regeneration.
The Self, Sovereignty and Solitude online immersion program meets four Thursdays: May 22, 29, June 5, 12, 2025, 1-3pm Pacific time.
