Self, Sovereignty and Solitude
“A space must be maintained or desire ends” —Anne Carson, Eros the Bittersweet p. 26
Do you sacrifice your feelings and real needs at the expense of your soul life?
How do you envision your house of the psyche? Is it big enough for your true self?
Sovereignty and solitude are regenerative resources for life. Centered in the life-affirming context of depth psychology, contemplative practices, and Jungian ways of knowing, I invite you to explore the gentle cultivation of solid self containment and grounded presence as you deepen your capacity for easing into solitude. Whether we are parents, partners, or on our own, the shifting cataclysmic reality of our time demands that we embrace change, ambiguity, and loss, releasing outmoded self-sabotage to voice our truth.
In our 60 minute online session, we will draw from life experience, psychic complexes, dream images, story, myth and fairy tales, and nature-based soul work. Hestia, goddess of home and hearth, lives at the center of our ever-glowing inner fire. In the spirit of Hestia, our soul calls us home; all parts of ourselves are welcome. A depth psychological approach to meaningful connection with self and other recognizes the dance of opposites: separation and solitude, past and future, masculine and feminine; all aspects are valued for gathering in the psyche’s creative focus. My intention is to invite an enduring presence of eros, our natural life force, in healing communication with the everyday self, meeting our joy, ambiguity, sorrow and loneliness with equanimity and respect.
In the sanctuary of contained space, our Zoom session will include a short presencing meditation and opportunities to connect with embodied knowing. This offering is for adults: spiritual practitioners, educators, leaders, caregivers, and anyone who is ready to relax ego control and reclaim their lifeline to their innate creativity and authenticity.
Areas of inner inquiry:
Self: understanding our relational potential with the transpersonal/Jungian Self
Sovereignty: images, experiences and capacities that root our beingness in true inner nobility
Solitude: how sovereignty can enable spaciousness and rich, generative solitude
Developing our relationship with solitude can substantiate inner sovereignty— our divine right to occupy our inviolate beingness as a sanctuary; a vessel of transformation that nurtures ourselves and kinship with the human and the earth community. This integrated autonomy is not static but a dynamic presencing process that beckons us into reception of an ageless transpersonal sense of Self in the great circle of life, death, and regeneration.
I look forward to sharing this depth inquiry with you!

“Of all the risqué behavior I indulged in during my youth, the period I spent not just single, but actively embracing my aloneness somehow feels like the most transgressive act of all.” — Lucy Scholes, A Woman Alone in London: On the Literature of Solitude

Spaciousness and Self-Containment
In an uncertain, fearful, and polarized world, we may feel overwhelmed or push ourselves to keep going while feeling out of touch with our deepest selves. We can call on inner and outer allies, using our intuitive and somatic discernment to strengthen ways of knowing that prioritize our soul-making, rooting into a vision of wholeness sustained by a subversive practical love.
Embracing solitude, grief, self care, and setting boundaries to protect our unfolding healing constitute our natural birthright. In our time together we will consider the reconciliation of feminine/masculine in the individual and collective psyche. Reconciling with and inhabiting our core integrity, we will invite a re-imagining of grounded spaciousness and self-containment that nurtures well-being and generative relationships.
Imagination and Presencing
We will consider perspectives on loneliness, loss, energy hygiene, health, technology and cultural anxieties as portals to new ways of knowing ourselves in the context of a richly entangled world involved in mysterious transformative processes.
By strengthening our boundaries and claiming our sovereignty we draw the world into ourselves, paradoxically becoming more available for intimacy with all life. Accessing our true nature and unique sensitivities to others, we can then show up with our voice and integrity to respond creatively to the complex challenges of earth and human systems in flux.
