"The dream calls our mind's attention to the body's instinctual feeling." —C. G. Jung, The Earth Has a Soul
Our work with dream images rests on one of the central tenets of depth psychology, that the psyche is real, and its images are real. In fact, C. G. Jung recognized that psyche is image (CW 13, para. 75). To approach a dream image is to open ourselves to a respectful, layered relationship with living symbols that affirm their intelligence as Others. The image exists in a context that crosses borders between the personal unconscious, the shared collective unconscious, and synchronous events in the external world. To follow the thread of one image is to discover links to an entire universe of meaning.
Our dream exploration is less analysis and closed interpretation and more an attentive process of letting the dream image open and speak for itself. Using association and amplification, we witness how symbols carry multiple meanings, and occasionally its underlayers reveal a mythic origin. The inner beings we meet in Dream Work and Deep Imagery are our wisdom keepers. These living images, Jungian psychologist and dream tender Stephen Aizenstat writes, "exist at the core of our being. We are born into their presence. They live with us always, making visit upon visit each night. Living below conscious awareness, they significantly influence our behavior and temperament, animate our life, offer warning when needed, and inspire our work" (2011, p. 12).
As a resource for our dream work I encourage you to keep a dream journal. Comparing, reviewing, and drawing or painting dream images over time can reveal related dream series that evolve and transform as their meaning unfolds in conscious reality. I have been working with my own and other's dreams for over 20 years, in inner Council, in nature, art, in focused dream groups, in somatic embodiment, and using applied Jungian modalities including Deep Imagery, active imagination, SoulCraft™ and Process Work™. Together we create a safe container for your dream images to shape themselves in our imaginal realm, so you can integrate their gifts and inhabit new, revitalized dimensions of being.
I look forward to sharing this sacred work with you!
