General Superintendent: The general superintendent exercised the supervision of the church, the school, and the poor. He had a seat and a voice in the Upper Congregation, as well as in the Land Oberkonsistorium, responsible for the aristocratic and monastic territories.
Since 1636, the designation general superintendent has been used. The royal and Gottorf general superintendents were each responsible for the shares of their landlords in both duchies. The unification of the royal and Gottfried districts in Schleswig in 1720 led to the final control of the royal general superintendent over the entire duchy of Schleswig. The duchy of Holstein was united from 1784 under the royal general superintendent.
In 1834, the office was divided into one jurisdiction for Schleswig and one for Holstein. With the introduction of the Schleswig-Holstein church constitution of 1922, the office of a general superintendent was abolished and replaced by the regional bishop.
