Summary of contents:
The work not only lists in tabular form, on the basis of the most recent surveys, the number of places of residence, the number of residential buildings, the number of single and family households, the number of males, females and all persons present in the locality and absent from the locality on December 1, 1871, as well as the number of persons present in the locality on December 3, 1867. December 1867; but it distinguishes at the same time the persons born in the place itself, furthermore the Prussians from the members of foreign states, with regard to the creed 5 main groups (however without emphasis of the Lutherans and Reformed, as well as the various smaller religious societies), according to age the children born from 1862 to 1871 and with regard to the school education among the persons born before 1862 the literate from the illiterate with an intermediate group, for which about the school education in the census cards nothing was indicated. In addition, it shows the number of blind, deaf-mute, insane and stupid people identified in each municipality. Of course, in order to satisfy all wishes, many more numbers could have been given; but on the one hand, this would have increased the work considerably, and on the other hand, the publication would have been postponed far, both of which we felt obliged to avoid.
"Topographie des Herzogtums Holstein" (Topography of the Duchy of Holstein) refers to various geographical and historical accounts detailing the region of Holstein, a historical territory in Northern Germany, including the Duchy of Lauenburg, Fürstentum Lübeck, and Enclaves of the Free and Hanseatic Cities of Lübeck and Hamburg. These accounts, often published in multiple volumes, provide detailed descriptions of the region's geography, population, cities, and historical significance.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Historical Significance:
Holstein was a historical territory, not a modern state. It was part of the Holy Roman Empire and later became part of the Danish Kingdom and eventually part of the Prussian Empire.
Geographic Scope:
The term "Topographie des Herzogtums Holstein" encompasses not only the duchy of Holstein but also surrounding areas like the Duchy of Lauenburg (a smaller duchy within Holstein), the Fürstentum Lübeck (a princely state), and enclaves (areas within the territory of other cities) of the Free and Hanseatic Cities of Lübeck and Hamburg.
Types of Accounts:
These "Topographie" accounts could take various forms, from maps and atlases to detailed texts with descriptions of cities, villages, and natural features.
