. Goal setting is something that is important because it drives a school into having something to work towards and when they are met, it shows the hard work.
One thing that through my philosophy and through the type of leadership that I am driven towards I think that interactions with others is something that seems to come harder for myself. Interactions through both democratic and servant leaderships have to be professional but at the same time have to be pleasant. Although, as a leader you must know that not all conversations are going to be pleasant since there are those that need to be harder, but professionalism has to always be part of any interactions. I believe that once that professional aspect is gone, between a leader and their staff, so is the respect that the staff has for their leader.
While reading more on the different types of leaders that one can be, it was very easy to narrow it down to democratic leadership, with a little bit of servant leadership on the side. A democratic leader is somebody who believes that everyone should have the same right when it comes to decision making. That the group that is being led should have a good working relationship with their leader and always feel supportive and interactive. A servant leader has all of the same type of leading points but a servant leader also includes more decision making as a whole team, the only part that I do not have in common with a servant leader is that this type of leadership is not right when it comes to making quick decisions in a whole group.
Realizing what type of leader I am or want to be was something that came easier to me; the harder part comes from how I am going to execute it and lead a school. There are many important factors in making sure that as a leader you are always acting with integrity and fairness. One of the biggest ones is that as a leader you are always making sure that the students always come first. That the students’ academic and social success are being met at the best of your ability. One of the ways to do this is to always have open communication with your staff members, regular check-ins, anything that makes it comfortable to be able to communicate with the people of yours school. Then, taking that open communication and having it with the parents, letting the parents in on anything that is important that has to do with their children. Open communication not only will be a way for a leader to be held accountable for anything having to so with the school but also for the students, staff and parents of the school.
With the different ways that the world is changing, that including the people, the school and the way school work are bound to change. As a schoolteacher, I am able to see how there is progression in some changes, that including the leadership styles of the people around me. With my chosen leadership styles of democrat and servant, along with my belief that a school should be a team work, that any decision making should be done with open communication I think that it pushes the school towards a better future. We as a society are already moving towards people being more open minded and accepting, so a type of leadership that lets people express their feelings and have an input in where the school moves forward to is going to help the school be more effective, especially when it comes to the well being of students. If the teachers are able to feel important, like their say in the school matters, then they are going to be motivated to want to say and do more for the school.
