Active Student Body is an important part of Mcdermoth Elementary because it gives students the chance to be leaders, to have responsibilities, and to citizen student role models for younger students who would one day want to be in ASB. This group helps the schools mission and vision by providing students with their needs, by advocating for what the students want, and helping the school become a place where students can have a say in decisions that they make. However, it takes a lot for ASB to run; one of the main things is a budget.
For ASB, there are many expenditures that go into and come out of the budget, but they are all needed to keep the program running. For example, a movie license needs to be paid once a year. It is an expensive license but without it, the school would not be able to provide a monthly movie night where fundraising happens for bigger purchases. Another big purchase is a Buddy Bench that was fundraised all of last year and bought this year. A buddy bench brings students in the school a place where they can make friends, they can seek guidance, and they can learn to become better students at the school by showing kindness. Lastly, a weekly expenditure is the sales of chips and ice cream. These sales are important because they are bringing the kids opportunities to be responsible, they are learning how to work with money, and they are able to act and problem solve if there are ever any issues with the sales.
The good thing about this program is that even if there was no funding, the program can still run. Besides the purchasing and fundraising, this program still does an important thing, and that is teach kids how to be leaders. There are many chances for the program to have the students lead, some being assemblies, lunch helpers or office helpers. Through out everything, the program is run by students, and with or without a budget, the students can still strive to be what the schools mission and vision wants them to be.
