Maximizing Instruction: Professional Development Outline
1. Learning Objectives
a. Introduce different strategies to maximize instruction in the classroom.
i. Strategies include things that teachers can do within the classroom and outside of class time.
b. Connecting the different strategies to different schools.
i. Being able to use all strategies with demographics of students.
2. Schedule of Professional Development:
a. 9:00 (5 Min) – Introduction
i. Introduce the main topics as maximizing instruction time outside of class, during class, and reflecting on strategies that worked and didn’t work
b. 9:05 (20 min)- Maximizing instruction outside of class time
i. Different strategies will be presented to staff on how they can increase instruction from the beginning of the day.
1. Planning: planning strategies are important, this is where staff can learn simple things as prep for lessons days in advanced. Staff can also to prioritize what is important. For example, is it important to make sure all worksheets are printed, or more important to create learning activities that work better for the kids? This is also a time to introduce blocks of planning time, once a week, where teachers can prioritize the learning targets of the week.
c. 9:25 (20 min)- Maximize class instruction
i. Introduce main strategy: Time
1. The time concept is something that helps teachers save, well, time. Having limited time transitions and limited time for activities. With having set schedules, using different strategies (such as timers, games, and word calls) for transitions, it is going to give the teacher more time for instruction, more time to answer questions that the students may have, and more time to learn the students and be able to pin point different students that may need help or teacher attention.
d. 9:45 (15 min)- Reflection
i. Reflect on the strategies presented
1. 5 min: reflect on strategies that teacher will take on, teacher to teacher talk.
2. 10 mi: Time given to answer any questions from the staff to presenter as well as filling out professional development survey.
e. 10:00 - Closing:
i. Thanking audience for participation, feedback, and welcoming anyone to email with further questions.
