Currently the hazardous waste (HW) generation from industrial sector is 7.2 MT (million tonnes) annually, of which approximately about 1.4 MT is recyclable waste, 0.1 MT is incinerable, and 5.2 MT is destined for disposal in landfills (MoEF 2000). The industries that generate huge quantities of waste are thermal power stations, and iron and steel plants. Non-ferrous metal industries, sugar, and fertilizer industries also generate large quantities of waste. Disposal of these wastes is largely uncontrolled; dumping on public land or in MSW sites is quite common. Every year, estimates also show that 54 404 MT of medical waste is generated in the country (based on a generation figure of 250 g/capita/day).
