I was away from home for most of my life.
To start off, I lived with Dolly & Percy Greaves at the Tungoil Project in Awarua. Went back home for a while, then helped milk cows on the Dysart's farm for Norman and May next to the Opokena Bridge. From there up to the old homestead of May's at Opoteke; by horseback to school.
I worked for Munday Rika fencing and digging drains, also hand sowing manure for Tom Blake, at the same time I was helping to milk at home across the river. Then away again helping out milking cows for Wi Tikena and Kaa Royal. Willie Royal and I used to bike to dances at Awarua. Back home again to milk more cows, away again for milking cows at Kirikopuni for a time, then home again to milk more cows.
At that stage I was a teenager, then old Ngaroma tomo me to a girl to marry - no way! so I joined the territorials for some time camped at Waitangi, Motoroa Island, Kaeo, Whangaroa Heads, Takapuna Heads, and Fort Dorset in Wellington, and back to Whangaroa for a time and out I went of the Army on leave without pay.
When manpowered to a job at Pipiwai I declined, and Bill got me a job at the Army Gardens at Maunu. That closed down and away I went to Karapiro State Hydro. I left there, back to Auckland, manpowered to work at Westfield, instead I got a job at a steel construction. I was living with Uncle Dan. From there I joined the Army to go overseas.
I got as far as Florence in Italy and was back home on 26 January 1946. Here I stayed!
It would appear that George wrote this panui himself
