Wana Kawhena (Ani) PikariAni, the daughter of Harry and Charlotte Pickering (Hori and Rati Pikari), was born on 23 March 1888 at Mangakahia. She was baptised Wana Kawhena Pikari on 29 April 1888.
Nothing is known about her early life up until she married and very little afterwards. She was just a very loving mother in the fullest measure and was a most respected, kind-hearted and very hospitable woman.
No matter what the number was she would always muster up something for a feed, sometimes it seemed out of nothing. One time when a busload of people turned up she made a feed up out of dandelion and pakapaka, that was just how she was.
She was a very good seamstress, nothing was wasted. Sacks were used to make pants with flour bags for lining. Sheets were made out of flour bags and blankets out of sacks.
Ani sometimes ordered mussels in at 7/- a sack of 25 dozen. She then sorted them out and sold them for 2/- a dozen, the broken or cracked ones were minced to make mussel soup so that it would go round the family. Sometimes she made kumara bread which was quite sweet. This was cooked in a camp oven in the ground on embers. She would cook anything.

Ani died on 13 July 1957 at the age of sixty-nine. The best way her children could sum her up was that she was the best mother out! From observing the children of Alfred and Ani Beazley by the next generation, some of the traits shine through. Stubbornness, righteousness, loudness, "Beazley" knees, etc. are quite common but this negativeness is also mixed with a lot of kindness, compassion and togetherness. A generous bunch with a great deal of aroha between them all.Back to Top
