Ensure students are placed in the correct class
Provide early formative feedback and establish dialogue about writing
Option 1: Reading and short summary/response paper about an issue in higher education
Option 2: "Be Curious About Yourself" essay from Johanna Schuerman; emphasizes character self-assessment and writing experience
Option 3: "Me-Search" essay from Megan Friesen; emphasizes self-assessment of writing experience
