“Stuart Scott and Women in Sports” by Jacqueline McIntyre is the story of how the role of women has changed during the career of the late sportscaster. Women are now prominent sports reporters as well as athletes. Evaluator Ilana Borzak liked Jackie’s ability with stories, but thought the multiple pages of notes were an obvious distraction, contributing to a disjointed delivery.
Manuel Saldana reported and took questions on the level of “Satisfaction” among members of Toastmasters International. Most members give high marks to the program overall, but gave their lowest rating to some of the materials provided by TI. Todd McKinney liked Manuel’s assured delivery and the relatable topic, but asked if there were not some more surprising or unusual findings that could be included. Todd also chided the listeners for not having a sufficient number of questions.
Table Topic Master Todd McKinney had questions taken from previous Toastmasters contests. Tatyana Gorbatyuk believes that more is possible than impossible, especially when you believe in a higher power. If Chris Sassone were Mayor of New York he would work to get guns off the street. Deb Leung would like to be remembered for making a difference by helping people with their language skills because she believes in “the power of words.” When addressing the United Nations Neerja Purang would advocate an end to world hunger, while Marcia Berry admits to many earlier mistakes but acknowledges the valuable lessons learned. Harry Aneziris then paid a tribute to Dennis Fokas, DTM on his recent passing. Dennis was an active and popular Toastmaster who touched all who knew him. He also was Harry’s distant relative.
General Evaluator Neerja Purang called on her team of Timer Tatyana and Grammarian Deb, and then asked that the meeting room entrance be more clearly marked. Neerja reminded us to announce all agenda changes before the meeting starts and to ramp up the energy and enthusiasm to the highest possible level.

Have your speeches been “Hitting the Mark?” Toastmaster of the Day Marcia Berry – who hit the bull’s eye at the 2014 District 46 Table Topics Contest – was a sharpshooter at this meeting. Guest Toastmasters taking target practice were Ilana Borzak, Chris Sassone and Joshua Magloire. “Bull’s Eye” was the Word of the Day presented by Grammarian and our Area 45 Director Deb Leung.
Harry Aneziris likes to read history, and noted that “75 Years Ago” - October 28, 1940 - his native Greece was invaded by Fascist Italy, and later by Nazi Germany. It turns out that one of the prominent Greek heroes who helped reclaim their freedom was Lt. General George Kosmas, whose wife was Harry’s Godmother. Speech evaluator Chris Sassone thought Harry hit the mark with his storytelling and effective speech structure, but suggested streamlining certain points for a clearer message.
In “How Everything Becomes One” guest speaker Joshua Magloire wanted us to know that oneness is the natural state of being, where there are no artificial divisions between people. Marcia Berry praised Joshua’s message and stage presence, but asked that he narrow the broad focus of the ambitious speech. She then reminded him that an advanced speaker should never call attention to their own mistakes, such as apologizing for forgetting lines.
