At FFR With Jess
On Family Day
we two sit
and sip
hot cocoa out from under
our matching whipped cream mustaches
When the waiter brings our French toasts
we ask for powdered sugar please thank you
We do not drink the water that tastes of sidewalk
but press the glass bottoms into the parchment place-mats
painting Venn diagrams
out of condensation
we are circling this pause
and then we speak of difficult things
I remember when I was your age
I was not so wise
we hatch plans for Indiana Jones adventures
and laugh and slap the table
we try to guess the age of the bus-boy
wearing the superman medallion
we will try to climb under and between the railing again
when we leave
