The 15th Aber reunion held on the 20-22nd April turned out to be a delightfully warm and pleasant affair. Most of the gang arrived on a sunny Friday afternoon for a gentle stroll down the prom (to kick the bar naturally) and book in at the Marine.
After one or two early drinks, we (the Passmores, Kettles, Spraggs, Joneses, Ansells and Des Drumm) ventured into the town for an Indian. Afterwards the potential pub-crawl only got as far as the Angel where, to our delight, we found the front room vacant at 10pm! We were joined by a few others and spent an enjoyable few hours singing our way (led by Mike Purslove) through all the old numbers. Most of us made a dismal attempt to remember Fizz/Buzz but luckily, the chairpersons were very lenient. One of our squad (JA) missed the games as he found his vindaloo a bit too spicy and had to make a mad dash back to the Marine. As we departed the Angel at about 1am the students were starting to pile in- it made us all feel our age.
Back at the Marine, the young Welsh farmers (and their fillies) were having their annual knees up. It was interesting to see how the youngsters behaved when sloshed - surely, we didn't behave like that?
Saturday morning saw some of the team head up Constitution Hill for a walk to Clarach and back. Unfortunately, John had still not recovered so we had to leave him in the bay window singing one of his favourite Johnny Cash songs "Rings of Fire".
Lunchtime saw us strolling to the Cambrian for a few drinks where we were joined by the Philips, Culleys and Evans' before we ambled down (at Howard's' pace) to the big event of the weekend: the Aber Town v Welshpool game.
On arriving at the ground, we were warmly greeted by Chairman Tiggy Bates who led us to our executive box. We were certainly well treated with enough food and alcoholic drink laid on to cater for the barmy army. It was a glorious afternoon and most people took the opportunity to stroll around the ground and bask in the warm April sunshine. Although the game finished 0-0 it was great to see Geraint Passmore make his comeback after breaking his leg earlier in the season.
The drinking continued in the revamped clubhouse before we headed back to the Marine for a quick shower, In the evening over 30 of us had an excellent meal at Gannets. The drinking was beginning to take its toll and around 11 pm we staggered off back to the Marine for a nightcap or two.
Sunday morning saw most of the squad walking off their hangovers down the prom - apart from Des who got on his bike and headed off to Wolverhampton (only to see his team get beat by the mighty Baggies.)
No footie this year but maybe if the weather is as good next year a spot of beach 5-a-side would be a possibility Derrick?
